GP1138
'99 Grand Prix GT 4-door. Left Right Upon investigation, we found this on the rear strut towers. I know a good body guy who might be able to fix this, but am I totally fucked here? I see on some Chrysler vans they have inserts that appear to take the job of holding the strut mounts in place and that anchor to the good metal away from where the strut tower has rusted. Is that at all possible here if welding new metal in proves to be too expensive? Or am I just fucked?
slick
Rusting through the rear strut towers = will not be cheap to fix.

GP1138
I already have a $1000 offer on it... don't want to be a douche but seriously. We paid $1500. I'll check this on every car I buy from now on. If I had known about that we wouldn't own the car.

Breakdown
John, Tis really the season to body work done. Wait longer and it won't be. I'd at least get an estimate on that, but being in a spot with two (new to you) $1000 to $1500 cars is a shitty predicament. My sister & brother-in-law live fairly isolated and they get by on one car. If you're going to sell the Grand Prix, allow me to make that suggestion for you to get a very good & safe winter car and share it for the time being, suffer, but with a nice ride and then hopefully in the spring you can afford to get a second car on the road. I'm just throwing it out there. In the end it's your call, it's just that there's so many other "John's" out there who are desperate to unload their tradgically flawed cars, like you are, you're in a minefield searching for two cars right now. I really am going to try to get this fixed before I unload it. If this guy wants to throw $1000 at me I'll let it go though. I have no trouble finding $1000 decent cars. Hell, I have no trouble finding $500 decent cars around here. Don't worry about that part. And my problem here is nowhere near the problem in that thread. It could end up like that though. I'll call the body shop tomorrow.
GOT2B GM
if you're gonna fix it , keep it. Otherwise , unload it.
GP1138
I really don't want to get rid of it, but wife wants a van and I want a 1st gen GP again. If we can fix it cheap, we might hang onto it longer, but otherwise, we've got a little cash squirreled away for this purpose and we'll chip in a little and get her a Venture or something. Regal_GS_1989
Ventures can be had for cheap.... I've noticed this in search of a 3400 motor... /hijack Yes, but the U bodies in general appear to be bigger rust magnets than even cavaliers and sunfires. Just need to keep that in mind if you decide to look at them.
4door Intl
Is this '99 Grand Prix super high mileage? Actually i've loaded more than 300,000k miles (492,000km's) on my 8 year older Supreme right here near rust-belt ground zero and i just looked- my shock mounts don't look corroded anything like this. That's with many winters parked in a heated underground garage which would only accelerate rust with the constant freeze/thaw cycles the car would experience each day in the winter. Did GM skimp on shock mount steelmetal thickness in the gen 2's? I'm definitely going to clean the top of tmy car's wheel wells and spray undercoating over everything but the bolts before winter comes, though....on the topside too for good measure. This is a repair and expense that nobody should have to experience.
GP1138
135k - and it looks to have happened on spot welds on the towers. Some sort of sealant not doing it's job.
