The brake booster in My 98 lumina 3.1 149K seems to be hissing when iam stopped, mostly on an hill or an incline, you know pressing fairly hard on the peddle. its a continual HISSSSS let up off of the pedle and its gone. it still stops fine like always. is my booster on the way out? it only has one good pwr assist when the enging is off, (i checked that just a few a go) Ideas, Suggestions lee

1979lee
sounds like a vacuum leak. check the brake booster vac line. I checked and there is no leak in the line, the hiss is coming from under the dash HISSSSSSSS very noticable , if it is the booster how do i remove it? i last changed on something like 15 years aago on a 78 chevy caprice, it was bolted on and hell to remove. lee
oscar_wilde
Maybe the booster itself is leaking air. Or some hose cracked near it.

White93z34
I'll assume you have ABS.... disconnect all 4 brake lines, electrical connections, and unbolt the master and pull it out. get under the dash and pull the clip out of the top of the brake pedal get a piece of wood that can fit between the posts that hold the master on turn it like you are unscrewing a cap and it ought to turn right off. then climb back under the dash and slip the rod off the brake pedal as you can now do that. pull the old out insert the new, connect the push rod again. then twist to install the new one. other then that install is reverse of removal. also replace the booster vacuum line if it looks questionable
