94GPGTP
Well i was in the search to get a newer tranny for my swap and since then i now have 2 replacements.. one from jeff and one from this J/Y in Ames,IA.. I found them on http://www.Car-Part.com they had a listing for a 1992 lumina z-34 M.T. 3.4 with mileage at 198,xxx.. The mileage kinda scared me until the moment i saw it on the pallet when i picked it up.. i talked to the sales rep at the yard over the phone and since i drove 6 hours there and 6 hours home we settled on me paying for the tranny only and i get the shifter, axles, flywheel, and bracket for free no warantty on it or returns.. that didnt matter to me at all i was happy he threw them in for free.. i also wanted the shift cables but they told me they were takin out of the car before they removed the tranny.. oh well.. so here is some pictures of what i have gotten.. Heres the MONEY SHOT!! So after looking at the pictures thats what i wasnt expecting when i got there.. This 284 has been REBUILT and not too long ago looking at the bellhousing on the inside and the gold plate that covers the gears... Also what i didnt expect it the tranny mount and the slave with that wierd ball to come with it.. i was like hell yea!! And h Notice the shifter is a tubular shifter? in a Z34?? i have the vin number if you can look it up to see if it was a factory 5 spd car.. I thought Z's didnt come with the tubular? Also the shifter arms are really wierd!! why is theat weight welded on the arm? after it was reman'd did they think maybe if we put extra weight on this arm it would go in gear better and the person driving wouldnt mess up the trans as fast? Well all in all i am 100% satisfied with this purchase.. I will be putting this tranny in in the next few days just to be sure it works... I had to remove barney cuz i messed up the throw out bearing thingy..

ss427
My car's matching number 284 has the weight on that arm as well. I can't explain why certain ones have it and others don't, but yours is the first one besides mine to have it. Check the vin stamp location on that tranny for a partial serial.. I'm curious what it came out of and if it was built near my Z. Steve

94GPGTP
Well cleaned up the tranny today to install possibly tomorrow depending on the weather.. It cleaned up real good.. Looks practically new.. I also snapped a few shots of the old tranny and the other tranny from jeff and my LG5.. All my W parts in the barn.. Old Tranny Tranny from Jeff
ss427
the vin stamp should be on the flat part on the top of the LH side of the case around the shifter cable bracket. It will only be the last nine digits. Steve
94GPGTP
i didn't see or cant see any stamping marks in that area on all 3 trannys.. i have info off the getrag tag though..
ss427
Interesting. Well in case anybody is interested, this is where mine was located and what it looks like. Also found this a little lower down. I guess "Mike" did final inspection..
crazyd
Getrag hasn't reman'd any 284's since the early 2000's. They sold off all the remaining repair parts in 2003. The weight on the shift arm was put on later production as well as all the reman'd 284's by Getrag. It improves shift feel, and from my understanding it also helps with the synchros on the 2-3 shift that was the known weakness on these transaxles. Mine has it too.
