microsvc
Have a '99 3.1L Lumina and am wondering where the temperature sensor is located on the engine that operates the instrument panel temperature gage. The temp gage is not working and is stuck left. Thanks for all the replies! ~Bob
Imp558
I can't see where it is but I can tell from the schematics it the usual single green wire that goes to it. Probably going to be a light blue plug and it looks like it could have 2 wires run to it but only one is there. Check around the head. It's been a LONG time since I've worked on a 3100..........but if the sensor setup is somewhat similar to the L36/L67 motors.....The sensor is on the LIM rite under the thremostat. I would think it would be in the general vicinity as the Thermostat on a 3100 as well.
Andrew
I think its on the rear head, drivers side. and yes, single green wire.
Crazy K
I think its on the rear head, drivers side. and yes, single green wire. no. that is 95 and earlier, and it is the secondary sensor for the cluster, not ECM/PCM. on a 99, it will be a single 3 wire sensor in the intake manifold, near the t-stat. if your gauge does not work... the sensor also gives info to the PCM on how to run your car. Dare I ask if you are driving around with a check engine light on? I have a list of people I need to kill for wasting my time inspecting cars that A-holes have for sale for this type of reason. Imp558
I'll be damned, that is a combo sensor, Black, Yellow, and Green wires. Green is the wire you want.

The check engine light is not on. If this is a combo sensor, then I assume it is either a broken wire or a bad gauge in the dash.
Imp558
The schematics show 2 separate circuits in there so it could still be a bad sender, just not bad on the ECT part that the PCM reads. Try grounding the green wire and see if the gauge reads full scale. Don't ground the others, just the green wire and have the key in the run position.. microsvc
I finally got around to locating the sensor and I grounded the green wire (pin thru the wire) and the temp gauge went full scale. Does this mean the sensor is bad or some other thing has gone crazy? If it is the sensor, how is this replaced? Thanks!!!
