silverbullet
I have a 90 3.1 Lumina Coupe. I just finished installing a new stereo so I had the battery disconnected. The next time I drove it the engine would idle below a 1000 rpms and would idle rough. I read somewhere that you can idle the engine for 20 mins, then shut it off for 5 sec. and then idle for another 20 min. Then you drive it over 80 km/h and it fixes the problem. Has anyone else heard of this method?
Robby1870
No, never heard of that. What is wrong with idling below 1000? If working properly, it should idle at around 700-750 and 650 in gear. Does the idle fluctuate while in gear? Robby
silverbullet
It fluctuates enough that the revs dip below zero on the tach and the engine shuts off.
Robby1870
Check your IAC valve. I bet its gommed up with carbon. Robby
silverbullet
I just found this on v6z24.com. I am going to give this a shot. Step One Restore battery power and turn off air conditioning controls. Step Two Run the engine up to operating temperature and shut off. Step Three Apply the parking brake. Start the vehicle and place it in drive (A/T), or neutral (manual). Step Four Run the engine until the cooling fan has cycled on and off, or for a maximum of 10 minutes. Step Five Turn the ignition key off for at least 5 seconds. Step Six Restart the engine and again shift into drive or neutral. Allow engine to run for at least 5 minutes. Step Seven Shut off engine for 10 seconds and restart. Finished That should do it. With engine stabilized and in closed loop, the IAC motor values should be between nine to 12 counts. If not, the adjustments may be tailored by adjusting the minimum air rate screw. More throttle valve opening equals lower IAC counts. Less throttle opening equals higher IAC counts. Thanks! GPRACER
Yes, sometimes you have to relearn the Idle if you have the battery disconnected. I just hold the brake with the car in drive and maintain aprox 2200 rpm for a couple of minutes, usually relearns by the time operating temp is reached. silverbullet
I tried the procedure I mentioned above and it worked great. My car is driveable again and it didn't cost me anything.
Baddflash
Glad the idle relearn worked for you. I had similar problem after installing new subs and the solution for me was to run a second ground from the battery to the frame.
Bolt_Crank
I find it easier to just not unhook the battery when installing stereo equipment...
