Stall on light throttle

'92 Cutlass 3.1L LH0. This problem started quiet a while ago. I thought it had gone away, but it just started happening again. The very first time this happened was at a stoplight, the light turned green, I stepped on the gas and the car stalled. This happened at every red light all the way home. I was able to prevent it from stalling by holding the brake and keeping the RPMs up a little at a stoplight. After I got home I experimented with it a little bit. In park and at idle, if I just tap on the pedal the RPMs will drop to nearly 0 and will then either stall or the RPMs will raise like it should with little throttle. I don't drive this car often and this just happened again yesterday. What do I need to check?

when is the last time you did a tune up?

have you had a pressure check for the fuel system?

I checked the fuel pressure the other day. It was a little lower than the specification in my service manual, I am going to replace the fuel filter and see if that helps, I don't know when/if it's been changed.

I've driven this car less than 3000 miles since I got it in 2007, so it hasn't gotten/needed all that much routine maintenance. It does have relatively new spark plugs and wires, a new ICM and one new ignition coil.

I do have a lot of test tools, so if there's anything you think I should check I can probably do it.

I had a similar issue with my 91' GP. After some looking I found the Throttle body to be gunked up. I took that bad boy off and cleaned out the idle port and the rest of the body with some brake clean.

Just an idea, sounds like what my car used to do. /shrug

Sure sounds like a dead spot in your TPS... I would start there.

I've been meaning to check the TPS but the tests in the manual require the Tech1 scan tool to read the sensor voltage. I've been putting it off until I make myself an ALDL>USB cable so I could hook it up to my computer. I guess I can just check it with my multimeter instead.

I have actually cleaned the throttle body and the air passages already, it was relatively clean. Thank's for the suggestion though.

run some seafoam through the next tank of gas, and do the engine ingestion method by sucking it through a vacuum hose. then pull and reinspect each plug, clan and re-gap/check gap and reinstall.

how about the fuel filter?

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm having the "stall on light throttle" issue too and I want to ask if you have made any progress?

I haven't worked on it much since I posted about testing the TPS. All I've done since then is test the MAP sensor which seemed to be fine. My next steps are the fuel filter, checking for restrictions in the fuel lines and if the pressure is still low maybe a new fuel pump, and Crazy K's suggestions in the post above.

wifey's GP used to *stumble* when you tried to take off from a stop with moderate throttle. since its ALWAYS done this, i just bumped up the AE table a little and the problem disappeared. so if its anywhere like this, then you are missing some fuel somewhere...

I've found in the past that this frequently turns out to be a vacuum leak... I did have this happen once, and it turned out to be the idle control solenoid was nasty, and sticking.
