GrandPrix34
well, i had a prob wit my t-belts and now finally they found the prob... Vegeta told me about wat drives the last pulley on the timing belt procedure... and it turns out that was the problem... that chain is fucking HUGE but thats the one thats making noise...there is something that is either broke or damage on the chain
SmokesGTP
Wow, so thats what everyone is talking about when they call our kevlar timing belts the secondary timing belt. I wasn't aware we had a chain as well. Why is that necessary? I'm just curious.
Redfox340
Wow, so thats what everyone is talking about when they call our kevlar timing belts the secondary timing belt. I wasn't aware we had a chain as well. Why is that necessary? I'm just curious. The crankshaft turns the camshaft gear sprocket: as shown. If it was a pushrod motor, that's all you'll need to run the camshaft. But in the DOHC, it's four overhead camshafts need more routing and therefore the belt. The bottom pulley on the secondary belt, is the camshaft spocket on the timing chain. Make sense? The sprocket and bottom pulley are directly connected. - Erik
SmokesGTP
Yeah makes perfect sense thanks for explaining it. God what a complicated mess that engine is

Vegeta
If we didnt have that oil pump setup, we wouldn't have needed the chain. Thats what happens when you convert a pushrod setup to be a DOHC. I can only imagine the fun you had pulling that cover off IN THE CAR to get to the timing chain. Stay away from cloyes if they happen to offer a chain for this motor...I had to replace their POS chain in my 3.1 after 50k, and im not the only one. Bolt_Crank
I heard somewhere (can't remember right now...) that the cam gears and such on the DOHC are plastic.... this true? o.o
Redfox340
I heard somewhere (can't remember right now...) that the cam gears and such on the DOHC are plastic.... this true? o.o No. The four camshaft gears are metal. It's the idler pulleys, used to route the secondary timing belt, that are plastic. Those pulleys and the actuator are *recommended* to be replaced when installing a new belt. - Erik

GrandPrix34
ok guys 2day was the last straw on this 2week saga of my car.... before going to work wit a buddy i decided to drop in on the mechanics to see the progres....one damn fan removed...in two fucking days the have managed to move out one fan to take the engine out!! I told my dad cuz he was working the whole day and he got pissed! So tomoroow after i get out of school we are going to the shop, tell them to put everything back together and bring her home to see wat we ourselfs can do... One thing though, my dad isnt much of an online pesron but he actually told me to thank you guys for the help! Its funny when you have to buy a Haynes manual and download/print the timing procedure AND print the bolt assembly for the engine itself THEN give it to the mechanic so he knows wat the fuck he is doing!!! I have the whole week off, an abundant amount of tools and a digital camera, digi video camera....when i bring her home i will take pics and video/sound of the tming belt noise and post, for now let me reask the question...... does anyone know why upon resetting the timing, the car was making a clanking noise (like krrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr)? Is it as simple as replacing some pulleys or as complex as they are telling me (inside the engine, damaged intermediate shaft) can the intermediate shaft get damaged??? SOMEONE HELP!!
