dodgethis
Hey guys stupid question. I had done brakes a while back for the front. When I was replacing the passenger side and putting the new rotor on I was worried that If i put it on and slide it all the way to the back that it would scrape the bracket that held the caliper on. I had nudged it a little bit forward to remedy that fear. I now have to jack the car back up because I can hear the rotor rattling when I go over bumps and what not. It doesnt do it when I press the brakes (Obviously). Stupid I know but do you guys just push the rotor to the far back on the axel and slap the caliper on? I should have done that if thats the case, my paranoia got the best of me. The braking is not an issue what so ever its just that rattle thats annoying as hell. Andrew
when you put the wheel on, that should have pushed the rotor back as far as it will go.
rockfangd
The rotor seats all the way onto the hub, then when the wheel is put on it holds the rotor tight to the hub. i would say that the rattling is coming from a loose or missing slider clip
dodgethis
The car never came with a slider clip. I will say this that when I took the tire off and inspected the caliper one of the rubber boots of the piston was protruding out. I tried to put it back in like the one next to it. The one next to it was perfect. The brake pad that just sits on top of the pistons had lost one of the metal clips that go inside the piston to hold on. I found out why the rotor is rattling. Its rattling due to the back pads are not keeping a snug hold on the rotor. I can see why I have a etched line scar on the back of the rotor due to evidently that clip that got sheared off from the piston probably cut into the rotor some how. The front of the rotor looks fine though. What do ya'll think? I mean is the piston screwed up and that's why the rubber is protruding out? I can see it has a little crack around the rubber area. A possible new caliper?
dodgethis
Anyone ever had the issue of the gasket around the piston get botched up a little when using a c clamp to push it back in slowly? What can be done to fix that?
dodgethis
Mods delete this topic, going to take it to firestone for a "caliper" inspection for a big $23.00 fee. Caliper = :uhaul: :uhaul:
dodgethis
Thought I would include my findings once I got it looked at. Basically the caliper is fine. I somehow didn't seat the pad onto the piston firmly and some how when the piston come out it sheared off two of the four pins of the back of the pad. They didn't see a big issue with it, but it will rattle due to the pins are gone from the pad. The guy was nice and give me pointers about what I should do next time when I take care of brakes. It was funny though because when i first walked in and explained my story, one of the guys (2 were there at the counter) just looked at me and said you need new pads. I was like no I don't I can live with the rattle. I don't want to spend more money on barely broken in pads. They took care of me, and I got to say I wish I knew their secret. The braking is alot firmer than It was before I took it in. I would have loved to find out what they did to make it that way. I guess they took that passenger side caliper and fixed it with the gasket coming out a bit, and now im getting full flush piston contact on the pads.
