94 olds vert Posted November 16, 2009 Author Report Posted November 16, 2009 why not just paint them black??? I decided I needed to brighten it up a bit. Quote
Radnsmash Posted November 16, 2009 Report Posted November 16, 2009 eh, you just wanted to be more similar to 5th gen MCs.... there's no shame in that There is no shame indeed. Quote
94 olds vert Posted November 21, 2009 Author Report Posted November 21, 2009 I need to get my car ready for the Michigan winter. My car was a NC car and has never seen a Michigan winter. I undercoated the underside today. Then realized I didn't do those stupid frame rails under the rocker panel. So I took my time and did those up right. Quote
94 olds vert Posted November 21, 2009 Author Report Posted November 21, 2009 It really hides it, and looks better than chipped it up white. Quote
Twenty Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 Looks great, but I trust you cleaned them, and that there was no rust or anything? Quote
94 olds vert Posted November 21, 2009 Author Report Posted November 21, 2009 Yup, I sanded them down and there was not rust on them. And they will stay that way. Quote
94 olds vert Posted November 24, 2009 Author Report Posted November 24, 2009 I painted the screws white for the third brake light, better than looking at rust I always say. Quote
Twenty Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 You overlook nothing, good to see that. Quote
94 olds vert Posted November 24, 2009 Author Report Posted November 24, 2009 You overlook nothing, good to see that. I'd say that's about right. Quote
5speedz34 Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 What did you use to "undercoat" the car? Quote

94 olds vert Posted November 24, 2009 Author Report Posted November 24, 2009 I used Dubli-color Undercoating. I bought two cans, but was able to do my entire car with one can and a little left. Now I have to do my dad's truck. Quote

RobertISaar Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 3M undercoat is good shit. Quote
5speedz34 Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 That stuff will hold more moisture in and cause you more problems and headaches that anything else. Quote
94 olds vert Posted November 24, 2009 Author Report Posted November 24, 2009 The guy at the store told me this is some of the best stuff he has. I used it to undercoat my corvair a while back. Hasn't caused me any problems. Quote
Regal_GS_1989 Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 The guy at the store told me this is some of the best stuff he has. I used it to undercoat my corvair a while back. Hasn't caused me any problems. There is undercoating, and then there is rustproofing. The undercoating helps protect you from seeing any of the rust that is taking place. If you don't plan on driving it in the winter, and the car remains dry for the most part, then it shouldn't really cause any serious issues. If you do plan on driving it in the winter though...well then I would have done rustproofing instead, which is an oily type coating that you generally apply seasonally to keep the moisture away from the metal. That rubberized stuff can allow moisture to get trapped between the coating and the metal and can actually accelerate the rusting. Quote
Crazy K Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 x2374165098265890750942187505 non what has been said. undercoating =/= rustproofing Quote

94 olds vert Posted December 1, 2009 Author Report Posted December 1, 2009 Started to sand my valve covers, I tried to get the majority of the paint off today, tomorrow i will start to get into the harder to reach stops and really start detailing it up nice. For the center, I was thinking of painting it a color, color is still undecided so chime on that. I was thinking white you think that would look good? What ever color I paint the center, I would get the matching color spark plug wires. Quote
RobertISaar Posted December 1, 2009 Report Posted December 1, 2009 either clearcoat directly over the aluminum or try and match the exterior color. Quote
94 olds vert Posted December 1, 2009 Author Report Posted December 1, 2009 Leave it polished. I think I am going to just polish the entire valve cover, and paint the 4 bolts white. Quote
5speedz34 Posted December 1, 2009 Report Posted December 1, 2009 Yes. Painting it is way ricey. Not to mention I've never heard of white spark plug wires. Quote
