94 olds vert Posted September 12, 2009 Author Report Posted September 12, 2009 So... I got some rust i think i am going to paint over it and clear coat it for now. I do something later to fix it. Quote
slick Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 Thats going to do nothing but trap in it, and rust it out from behind. Quote
94 olds vert Posted September 12, 2009 Author Report Posted September 12, 2009 that doesn't sound good Quote
jman093 Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 Yeah, rust at that point it needs taken care of, not covered up. Quote
tunerlover3 Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 Grind it down till you see rust no more then see how bad the damage is. Quote
Stevo Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 Once you see the paint bubble like that, it's all down hill from there. You can grind it off but it's going to come back. Quote
94 olds vert Posted September 13, 2009 Author Report Posted September 13, 2009 So I pulled some carpet off in the trunk and wow I could press a whole right threw it. So I guess I am going to use some bondo on it. And red neck it back together. Quote
Euro Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 You should probably take off the side moulding piece there and see how far it goes down the panel behind the piece. Quote

oldscsc Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 You did not catch it early. That is nasty. Like has been said, don't "redneck it together". You will be much better off by paying someone to cut that crap out and weld in new sheetmetal. Do it now or junk your car in a couple years because it won't pass safety. NOT something you want to ignore or cover up. Quote

oldscsc Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 Cosmetic until the whole underside of your car is covered in rust and your floorboards aren't solid anymore Quote
jeremy Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 that doesn't look or sound like you caught it early.... Quote
MonteCarloChick Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 Cosmetic until the whole underside of your car is covered in rust and your floorboards aren't solid anymore Well there is a difference between factory quality rot typical of certain models and taking care of the rest of your car. The rust coming from the inside out is factory made fuck ups. I have a hole on the side of my car and I can assure you that the under side of my car looks damn good for where it is. Im sensitive about people's fear of cosmetic rust. Quote

It's purely cosmetic theres guys in pickup around here with cab corners and rockers rotted out with current inspection sticker but they wont pass my car casue of a small hole in quarter panel Because as a PA certified state inspection mechanic, the exhaust exits a truck on the right hand side near the rear bumper, which would not let exhaust fumes into the cab. On a two door car, a hole in the quarter panel is much closer to where the exhaust exits, and is more possible to enter the cab. Quote

boulevard Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 Oh please... you guys are making it sound a lot worse than it really is. Maybe the car would fail in accordance in state safety laws, or whatever, but my '98 Lumina's way worse. I'll post up pics in a little bit. Then you can talk about bad rust spots... shit.. mine looks more like a big stretched @$$h01e... lol! You'll see what I mean. Give me a few minutes. Quote
jeremy Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 Oh please... you guys are making it sound a lot worse than it really is. the ability to push a hole through rusted area in the trunk certainly isn't a good thing.... Quote

It isn't a good thing. What is not a big deal is his current rust spot. Even though it will spread in a quick rate and ruin his car, it does not compare to mine. Passenger Side <img src="http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/9905/0913091757.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/> Driver Side <img src="http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/5029/0913091757a.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/> Now that is horrible and something to cry about. Will be repairing it after winter. Quote
