ss427
I started the car this morning (92 Z34) and first thing I did was check the volt gauge. It seemed to go a little higher than normal, about to the 3/4 line, but quickly went down to about half way between middle and 3/4 lines. I didn't have time to get a digital reading with my meter so I started driving. About 10 seconds after I start moving, all the electricals seemed to flash. The radio went dead for a split second, and then came back on along with the dash lights. The dash lights etc stayed on for the same amount of time as they would after you shut the door, and then went out. The engine didn't die. Thought it was weird but kept going, paying close attention to what the needle was going to do. For the rest of my 15 minute drive to school, the needle stayed in its usual position, but was shaking the whole time, looked like it was vibrating. Also, if I hit the brake pedal, the needle would quickly drop down to zero and then go back up to where it was. When I normally hit the pedal it would only flinch. At school, I put the tester on the battery while running. It was putting out anywhere from 13.4-13.9 volts. Turning on the lights would make it drop but volts would go right back where they were. Upon shutting off the engine, the battery read 12.6-7. After classes I checked the battery again and it had the same reading. Started the car and drove home, the needle shaking just like in the morning. Does anybody know what might be going on? The only reason I am asking about this is because it the needle never shook at all prior to this morning, and because last time I checked the volts with car running they were over 14. I didn't experience anything at any time driving the car the previous evening to lead me to any conclusions.
mra32
real quick, make sure the battery terminals are on there well. I had a problem with that once and it was giving me all kinds of trouble.
digitaloutsider
If you check all the connections and they're good, the voltage regulator in the alt is probably on it's way out.
White93z34
Check the above mentioned, as well as that Aux post next to the battery.
ss427
NICE! Negative terminal was loose! I feel a little stupid for not checking that in the first place, but I'm glad I asked on here. Thanks! Problem solved
