BN
My 93 Cutlass 4.3 seems to idle to high. When I start it up it goes to 1,500 and then comes down to 1,000. When driving down the street it seems to be at about 1,000 with foot off gas. Do I need to do the idle re-learn thing or is this something else? White93z34
how fast does it come down when you first start it up? honestly it sounds more or less about how the car should act.

White93z34
Any service engine soon lamp? how long does it stay at 1500 before settling to 1000?
Andrew
this sounds normal to me. Any engine should idle higher upon initial start-up.
BN
Any service engine soon lamp? how long does it stay at 1500 before settling to 1000? No service engine lamp. Doesn't stay at 1,500 very long. Maybe everything's ok. Most other cars I've had idle between 500-700?
tunerlover3
Does this do it every time you start it or just when cold? It actually sounds normal, though its a little high after it warms up.
RobertISaar
its in the tune/code for it to SPECIFICALLY do this, its nothing odd... probably to prevent stalling/wandering idle...
jman093
Ya, it will set a code if the idle speed isn't want the ECM wants to it be.
19Cutlass94
My car will idle at 1200 until it warms up, then the idle comes down to about
RobertISaar
yep. all completely normal. theres seperate tables in the BIN for park/neutral and drive for idle speeds.... BTW: 3.1s(LH0) DO NOT like an idle under 700RPM. i'm not sure where the breakpoint is for LQ1s....
BN
I guess I won't worry about it then. Thanks for the help.
BN
This idle has been getting worse. When started it shoots up to 2000 - 2500 and then slowly comes down. I did the paperclip thing and it said idle control valve. I put on a new ICV and it's still the same. I thought maybe a vacuum leak but checked the whole thing with carb cleaner and didn't find anything. I though I'd see if you guys had any ideas before taking it into a repair shop. RobertISaar
disconnect the battery and do an idle relearn... i bet it won't start up at such a high speed...
BN
Did an idle relearn and no go. It still runs like a runaway train?
RobertISaar
Did an idle relearn and no go. It still runs like a runaway train? then it's certainly a hardware issue. somehow the minimum IAC value creeped up in the GP to 48 a few days ago. did an idle relearn and it fixed it... That really sounds like a vacuum leak to me. If the engine is idling higher than a specified RPM for "x" amount of time(I don't remember offhand), it will throw a code for the idle control circuit. Did you spray the cleaner around the intake manifold(s) as well as vacuum lines?
BN
I sprayed as many vacuum lines as I could reach. I'll do it again on the intake area.
BN
I took it to a mechanic and it ended up being a vacuum leak. He had a hard time pinpointing it so he ended up replacing alot of the vacuum lines and it solved the problem.
