Another strut question

Ok, so this is probably hidden in the 60 odd pages of the suspension threads but, I'm being lazy today

Looking to do my struts hopefully soon. Monroe SensaTrac and KYB are the options of course. Which is the better??? I've ran the Sensa's on my old truck and thought they were great. Now, I'm in the Cutty and this is a whole new world for me. :willynilly:

both are great. either one will serve you fine.

most people here will tell you KYB though.

X2.

Keep in mind, neither are really considered a performance shock. KYB lists the GR2/Excel G's as an OEM style replacement shock (in terms of ride and performance). The Monroe's will be about the same.

If your going for a performance option, well you are kind of out of luck. A few members have taken a set of Koni's (application was for another vehicle), and modified some components for them to fit, but that is about it.

I thought I read a thread where a few people were complaining about Sensatracs being too soft. Of course, that was on an intrigue iirc...

SensaCraps will make you feel like your riding on a cloud, and in the corners you will feel like your gonna roll the car over on its side.

KYBs are as performance oriented as you can get for our cars without going nuts on custom stuff

I'm probably mis-reading this, however I'm assuming it's about as performance of a name that we will get on these cars.

From KYB's website, http://www.kyb.com/products/shocks/gr2.php

Purpose: Restores a vehicle’s originally designed handling and control

* Calibrated to compensate for worn suspensions

* Components and valving are designed specifically for each application

* The best choice to restore OE performance and normal driving conditions

* Built with quality that matches or exceeds OE

* Coverage for domestic and import cars, trucks, vans, minivans, and SUVs

So sensatracs are better for ride quality and KYBs for performanceish is what your saying? I do a ton of highway driving in my 03 and feeling every bump gets kind of annoying... So I would go with sensatracs for a DD

That could also be attributed to your tires. Some tires are much stiffer than others. I would honestly get KYB's either way.

KYB IT IS  Like I said, I had a set of sensa tracs on a 2wd Chevy 1500. Worked fine for a while and started getting a little light later on. I am a fairly spirited driver so I'd like to feel that "lovely rail" under my tires. Hell, it's a CS coupe If I'm going performance on everything else, might as well not F around  :burnout: Plus this has to be one of the faster cars I've owned next to my old Maxima (that had nearly 200k mi's on it) and Beretta  (lost her to a telephone pole. Loved ol' Retta).

Thanks guys!

  • 2 months later...

Just put the KYB's on last weekend and major diff. Love the ride. now time for new tires. Anyone running 235/60/16's?? I want to go with a little wider tire and saw that would be an optional size.

You should only stick those on the widest rims... like the gp crosslaces, only.

Also... you should be using 235/55R16, or you will be driving an oversize tire that might rub and affect speedometer accuracy.

When we bought my car it had 245/50/16's on 5-spokes. I literally had almost no sidewall and the tires where stiff as hell!

Check with tire manufacturers and their specs as to how wide of a rim you should run with a specific tire. That being said I agree with Ken the only rim I would be using to plus size tires would be crosslaces.
