rshelton111
I have upgraded my ECM Assembly in my 95 Olds Cutlass Convertible w/3.4L V-6. The GM Part # is: 88961145. It was installed by a third party. Two questions: 1. It is believed that by upgrading I have also upgraded the chip because in 1995 it was made into the ECM. Newer years to upgrade all one does is download the upgrade from GM and FLASH the chip that is there. The same thing you do to upgrade the BIOS in your desktop computer. 2. Does anyone know how to find the specifications of this new hardware/software combination? What are the tranmissions shift points, that sort of thing. Thanks, Bob Shelton

What exactly is this? A different ECM that works on 95 cars? Why did you upgrade?
RobertISaar
english please... the stock 95 LQ1 PCM has a removeable PROM, are you now using a PCM that gets flashed through the ALDL port? EDIT: just looked it up through Rockauto, its just a regular 16196401, same as the original, probably has a few different components on the inside of it, but its the same PCM. rshelton111
1995 was the year GM converted from replaceable EPROM chips to flashable chips (like the BIOS chip in your desktop). You either replace the chip to get the most current programming or your flash the chip with the most current programming because it will make your vehicle more efficient, run better or a host of other things - whatever GM has upgraded for your vehicle. More than likely your 95 will need the chip replaced and you should replace the ECM Assembly as well. The parts will run you around $250 to $300 based upon where you buy them. However, your 96 can be flashed either by a dealer or someone that is authorized to connect into the GM link where you download the information to be flashed into the chip. RobertISaar
not necessarily: 3100s had Flash-only in 1994 as well as LT1s, v6 f-bodies had flash in 93 and cadillac has used flash in every northstar setup IIRC. some of the HD trucks didn't get flash ECUs until 1998. RobertISaar
i'm not sure what he's trying to say, but it has a new part number, and as far as we know it's the same ECM. a couple of different or maybe new internal parts isn't going to change the programing, thats all in the PROM.
