Alternator is toast...how hard to change?

I got stuck in heavy traffic today because of an accident, and when I finally got to a point on the freeway where I could get off, I noticed my turn signals were blinking slow, and causing my speedometer to jump around. I looked a little closer, and my volt light was on. Shit.

I managed to get the last 8 miles home, the volt light on the whole way. Got her in the parking lot, shut her down, and she still started right back up. I figure I must have a good battery.

I am almost 100% it's the alternator, because it has been making a whining noise for the last few months. Today though, that whining noise is completely gone.

How hard is it to remove the alt? I've never done one before.

if its a 3100 its right on top and very easy.

Yeah, it is the 3100. It looks pretty straight forward, I didn't get a chance to take a closer look at it because it was running, and hotter than bawls under there... I'll let it sit for an hour or two and then go take a look at it. $129.00 seems to be the set price on a new one...damn.

it's a 10 minute job

Knowing me, it'll probably turn into an all day job lol

Do you have your arms amputated? If you have to use your feet only, it will probably be an all-day job, yes. Otherwise you're golden, seriously.

I think the alternator has been replaced with a reman once already :supaburn: It looks just like the one on Auto Zone's website.

10 minutes to someone who knows what the hell they're doing=me going :willynilly:. Eventually got it removed and tested. It was kinda funny, the word "FAIL" popped up on the little screen of the tester. Got the new one on, and it appears that I did everything right, which surprises the hell out of me.

Time for a well deserved beer.

Good deal.

Not near as hard as you were expecting, right?

Not at all. Still lots of swearing was involved though

so how long did it take?

Actually working on it, maybe an hour and a half. Time trying to figure out what I was doing wrong, and time waiting at the parts store, about 3 1/2 hours.

For never having done it before, I'm proud of myself. Like slick said, it wasn't near as hard as I feared it would be.

If I had known exactly what I was doing, it would have been 10 minutes. You guys were dead on about that.

Do you have the 3100?
