mmltml
my car has always had really soft brakes since we bought it. I never really thought much of it as I'm used to it now. they slow me down fine at speeds, but in a panic stop they kinda just ease into the power...i can't really describe it other than that when i stomp on them, nothing really happens for a few seconds and then i gradually start feeling the real stopping power, and today on my way to work, those few seconds almost cost me an accident. i had to use my emergency brake to stop me in time because the idiot in front of me decided to come to a complete stop from 55. we just inspected the brakes when we took the snow tires off back in march, and we replaced the rear pads and the fronts looked fine...any ideas on what could be causing this? Crazy K
this the 95 monte? does it have ABS? are any of the warning lights on? (ABS or brake) do the abs or brake light illuminate during the bulb test?
mmltml
yes its a 1995 and it has ABS that works...none of the lights are on, i've never done a bulb test but my low traction light works and today when i had to use my emergency brake, the red brake did illuminate
88red4cyl
My 95 Lumina does the same thing you are describing.. Pedal goes waaaay down when you brake... My pads are pretty good, and my fluid is full... I have the non-abs drum/disc setup though...
Andrew
i would have a full brake fluid flush done.
Crazy K
both of you should go ahead and do a full brake bleed and see what happens. yes, you need a friend, and some hose would help.... IMO, the ABS systems on our cars can EAT SHIT. even when they work, they have no pedal feel.
mmltml
IMO, the ABS systems on our cars can EAT SHIT. even when they work, they have no pedal feel. they seem pretty weak when they kick in compared to other cars i've driven, but my monte doesn't really need them, its pretty heavy and it takes a pretty slick road to make them kick in but thanks i will flush them and see what happens
mmltml
i would have a full brake fluid flush done. how much do you think that will run me?
Crazy K
i would have a full brake fluid flush done. how much do you think that will run me? are you capable of doing stuff for yourself? read a little: http://www.gadgetonline.com/BrakeFlush.htm I always two man it. I get someone to help by going to each valve and operating it, while they apply and release the pedal. I scream "Push and hold" open the valve letting fluid release, shut it again and then scream "release" I also use a peace of nylon hose 5/16ths iirc and stick and hold it on the end of the bleeder and run it into a larger drink bottle to catch the waste.
