I'm pulling the GP out next weekend and pulling the motor to remove the snapped crank position sensor. While I've got the motor out, I plan on giving the engine bay, engine, and transmission a good cleaning, as well as replacing some parts...

I'm planning on replacing:

Crank Position Sensor.. enough said!

starter (old one is dying, and I have a brand new 3400 starter I was gonna use in the TGP, might as well use it)

motor mount (again, a spare TGP part.. this one is solid rubber)

Oil pump drive seal

Injector O-rings

Fuel Line O-rings

PCV valve

O2 sensor (maybe.. can't find one on Rockauto)

Knock sensor connector (tabs are broken)

sparkplug wires

AC Accumulator

AC Line O-rings

AC Orifice Tube

New Oil pan gasket and sealant

Anything else you guys think I should do or replace while I have it apart?

Is it leaking oil from the rear main at all? It wouldn't be a bad idea to replace it even if it's leaking a little bit, you do have to pull the oil pan anyways. The Z24's wasn't bad, but was seeping a tiny bit and had residue on the block so I could tell it was coming from there. I was broke when I did the clutch or I would have done it then. I am definitely replacing it if I replace the clutch again, which I will more than likely do if needed.

Hey man, I'm glad to see you decided to keep it. I remember when that sensor snapped off, you were ready to pull your hair out.

I remember you mentioned at one point that we had very similar cars. Apparently too similar, as yours decided to pull a stunt turning it into a paperweight also! :willynilly:

Glad to hear you're gonna get it running again

Thanks guys

Would it be easier to pull the engine out the top, or out the bottom? Also, is there a writeup somewhere for pulling a 3.1? Just wondering if there's anything I should make a point of looking out for.

Honestly dude, I would just pull the whole thing from the top, that's what I ended up doing with the 89 the second time around and it really wasn't all that hard. Just disconnect all the wires and mounts and everything and pull it out. It only took me a couple hours to get it out the top, granted it was a stick and the tranny is a little smaller, I could only imagine with an automatic, it would probably be a bitch just to disconnect the tranny while it's still in the car, but idk, maybe someone can chime in. There are a few threads about it if you search, I am gettin to bed in a min or I would find some for ya. But even if your rear main isn't leaking, you may as well replace it anyway if you are going to have it out. I would replace everything you can while it is out that would be a pain to replace while it is in the car just in case and also to give you peace of mind that you know it is new. I replaced just about every single gasket and half the sensors in the 89 while I had it out just because it was out and easily accessible. You are welcome to call me if you still got my number and I can help ya out if you got any questions, it's still pretty fresh in my mind everything I did, and I got a bunch of pictures on my computer somewhere. I will try to get some tips for you tomorrow if I get some free time.

Good to know.. Do you guys think I should pull the engine and trans out the top as one unit (if that's even possible :dunno: ) or should I separate the engine and trans, then just pull the engine itself? I looked at one writeup and it kinda looks like a bitch to separate the engine and tranny..

What do you think?

I figure it would be easier to drop it out the bottom, since it rests on that subframe and all... but then again that would require undoing the whole front suspension. I also have never pulled the engine out of a car before, so I could be dead wrong...

I pulled my LQ1 out through the top, but that was also a manual trans and I already pulled the PMIII because it needed to be replaced anyways. I don't know what to tell you, since it's an AZ car you don't have to worry about rust making the subframe option alot better choice, but you also need to jack the car way up to go that route.

Plans changed, we're pulling the engine next weekend instead. Probably pulling it Friday night (while its maybe under 100*... then spending the next day cleaning the engine, engine bay, replacing parts, and hopefully get the engine back in by nightfall on Saturday. The GP will run again next weekend!

Nick,

I have pulled my TGP engine and tranny all together through the top. Its not that bad at all. Just disconnect the wiring connection on the passanger side fiewall and all the wiring on the passanger fender well( computer, foglight fusebox) and lay it up on the engine and of course all the hoses and stuff on the drivers side. It is so much easier leaving every sensor still connected. I pulled the TGPs out from start to finish in 4 hours and was taking it slow. Good luck!!

Well, I finally got a start on it yesterday. I pulled the engine, mounted it on the engine stand, flipped it over, popped the oil pan off, and finally got that broken crank position sensor out :willynilly:

Now I'm just cleaning everything and replacing whatever needs attention. I ordered new crank seals for it as well. The front seal behind the crank pulley is weeping a little, and the rear main may be leaking a tiny amount, but not enough to register on the dipstick between changes.. I figured why not, since I have it all apart anyway.

Also, check out my motor mount... this is the absolute worst motor mount I've ever seen! It is definitely the original mount with 223k on it, and there is almost no rubber left on it! It is literally metal on metal and I can fit several fingers inside the mount between the base and the U-shaped piece of the mount.. absolutely awful.. I'm replacing that sucker with my spare solid rubber mount.

Here are some pics.. I tried to take some pics of me in the engine bay as well  Yes I'm really tired.. I was running on a little over 3 hours of sleep from the night before.. At least it wasn't ridiculously hot out, only 105* for the weekend.

Keep up the good work man! BTW, that mount is almost as bad as the rear tranny mount when I changed it on my Fiero. It was literally torn completely in half, with only the safety preventing it from falling apart in the car! :willynilly:

Thanks  and yeah, the only thing holding the U-shaped piece of metal to the mount is the little bar going across the mount :willynilly: There's literally almost no rubber left on that mount, and it is bare metal underneath the U-shaped piece :willynilly:

  • 2 weeks later...

I finished putting it together on Sunday and she fired right up, then drove it home last night. All fixed and she's finally home!
