mmltml
Alright...i'm new here but heres whats going on with my car. I have a 1995 Monte Carlo Z34 with the 3.4 DOHC (LQ1) with 99k miles on it. I noticed back when it had 94k or so miles that the coolant in the overflow tank was pretty dark...then A few thousand miles ago I took it to the shop because it wasn't idiling right and they replaced the O2 sensors and i pointed it out to my mechanic and he said that the head gaskets were probably blown. BUT he was basing that assumption just on the fact that there was oil in there. He didn't pressure test the cooling or do a compression test. My oil and trans fluid is perfect. The coolant in the radiatior has just a hint of oil in it. I did a cooling system test and it held pressure fine. The only other known problem that I know my car has is the o-ring oil leak. why/how is oil getting in there? should i be concerned? I was talking with one of my friends who is a retired mechanic, and he said his wifes 97 cutlass that has the 3100 engine has had oil in the tank for years and it still runs fine and the gaskets are fine! whas goin on? 88red4cyl
Have you lost any trans fluid or oil since you noticed this? Has the coolant level been rising, or just turned dark?
mmltml
trans fluid, no. but it is leaking oil from the oil pump drive o-ring.
Quaraxkad
I did a cooling system test and it held pressure fine. This isn't a 100% confirmation that the headgaskets are not leaking. Get a leakdown test, that'll tell you with almost 100% accuracy if the headgaskets are good/bad.
