W30post
My sister has a 96 Monte I gave her. The intake gasket has failed and is allowing a lot of fluid to drop on the driveway. She has stopped using the car and it doesn't appear that anitfreeze is on the dipstick. I did a search for this but didn't go through to many of the threads. Is there a write-up on it? It shouldn't be too hard since I have put an entire drivetrain in that particular car but I just don't know the specifics about that intake design. Thanks James
swift13
im not sure if there are any writes up but almost everyone on here has done it or had it done (probably a few times) its rather easy and if you are mechanically inclined as it would seem you are shouldnt take you more then 4 hours to tackle it. everything on the top end besides the heads have to come off, alt, p.s.p., throttle, egr valve, and dont forget to drain the coolant. im sure im forgetting something, but if you find there is coolant in the block there is a bottle of flush fluid you can buy (i forget the name) and you will have to change the oil a couple times recently after. at least thats what i do im sure people on here do it differently and im sure that probably works too. Crazy K
DON'T MIX PUSHRODS. they are different lengths. I recommend FEL-PRO PERMADRY gaskets. they are much stronger and will not go bad the way the oem ones do. they cost more but the cost is worth it. MonteCarloChick
Yeah lay the rods out on a piece of cardboard that's labeled so you put them back in correctly It is rather easy once you get in there and see what needs to be taken apart. W30post
Uhmmm, pushrods have to come out for this? I'm really a V8 guy so this is a little different. I didn't see having to do this on the 92 Z34 I had when I replaced the intake to plenium gasket. Oh well, is there a rocker arm adjustment procedure or are they torque to spec and leave? Crazy K
torque to spec. some info: http://www.w-body.com/forum/index.php?topic=72828.0 and roller rockers are fun! I want to say that when i last did them, I was told to tighten to 25ft/lbs and then turn 30 degrees more, or to tighten to 30ft/lbs. so I did 25ft/lbs, then set my torque wrench to 30 and turned them 30 degrees, at which point the wrench popped exactly! I remove the roller rockers one at a time and put them right back where they were. if you mix intake and exhaust rod you will bend valves. W30post
Well I finally tore the upper and lower intake off this car. Sister's new husband wrenching with me. ~1.5 hours in now and the only real tool needed besides the general stuff was something to release the fuel line from the fuel rail. Thanks again guys for the input in this thread and the link to the other thread. I will be putting this back together Sunday. It looks like a non roller rocker motor. There was some coolant in the oil after pulling the intake but the car has sat a long time. I will be changing the oil also.
BXX
Umm, why would you need to remove the rockers? http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=&item_ID=78511&group_ID=1558&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog Best thing I have ever bought
Crazy K
no roller rockers? what year/car is the engine from? does it have the provisions, which are slots cut under the current pushrods?
W30post
Umm' date=' why would you need to remove the rockers? http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=&item_ID=78511&group_ID=1558&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog Best thing I have ever bought [/quote'] Gasket goes behind pushrode to seat on head. No rollers, maybe it was but I thought I would have noticed. I will see tomorrow.
