jj32
I want to replace the TCC solenoid in a '95 3.1L Lumina with the 4T60-E trans in the hopes of fixing this problem. Can someone list the steps required to access and replace the solenoid. Also, I'm seeing two parts available on rockauto.com. One is $11 and the other is $46. Which one do I need? the more expensive one is PWM
Brian P
The PWM solenoid acts as a TCC apply "softener" in that it regulates the flow of the fluid after it passes the TCC solenoid (I hope that makes sense). The PWM solenoid replicates the accumulator piston, which is no longer used when the 4T60e started using this solenoid. Does the shudder happen consistently, or only when the clutch is applying/releasing? Does the clutch hold steady while cruising and on the throttle? How do I know when the clutch is applying/releasing? I t seems to do it more when I take my foot off the accelerator between 50-60. When I do a hard acceleration to 60mph it does not occur
Brian P
On these cars (and most FWD), the clutch is supposed to release when you take your foot off the accelerator at all highway speeds, then reapply within ~5 seconds of getting on the gas again. It usually won't release under hard acceleration until you get to the point that it downshifts into 3rd gear (my '95 behaved this way). The clutch will also immediately release upon depressing the brake, whether you're on the gas or not. When you feel the shudder after taking your foot off the gas, does it happen for a while, or only for a split second? I get that "shudder" feeling of the clutch releasing at those speeds, and to be honest I don't know what the fix is for that. My TCC solenoid is working okay, and PWM solenoid works alright most of the time but it sometimes acts inconsistent once it's hot. Something like that could even be from the fluid or worn parts in general, not so much the electronics.

It stated doing this about 6 or 7 years ago. The dealer could not find the problem. Could bad ignition coils cause similar symtoms? The car has 191,000 miles and other than this problem it runs great.
Brian P
it could but usually an ignition problem is more prevalent under load/on throttle.
tornado_735
One thing I would check is the Anti Torque Struts. I thought my converter was taking a dump right after I bought the car. Shudder and and bucking like you describe. The rubber bushings were shot in those struts. Found BRAND NEW ones in a GP at the boneyard, and they cost me $20. Never had a problem since. RobertISaar
could also be the hydraulic mount... i had that explode on me and it acted about like this, usually only when the motor was cold and the TCC locked, it would shudder until i either made it downshift/unlock or it warmed up... easy way to tell if its bad from above the motor: take your hand and run it underneath the crank pulley against the frame, if your hand comes out covered in what looks like oil(and there will probably be rotted rubber down there as well) then thats at least part of the problem
SrMichi
I had the same symptoms when i first pick up my lumina. when i started the car i could feel that it was missing when i got on the highway the car would shutter when it when into 4Th gear so i kept it in over drive for the ride back home. when i got home the car was missing so bad that i could not even back into the driveway. it had no power what so ever i had to get a running start just to get in. after that i changed Control module, coils, plugs and wires problem went away. dodgethis
I have a similar problem with my problem (Imagine that) It does the bucking when I have the foot on the gas just slightly before wants to go into 3rd or 4th gear it will constantly buck. I am so sick of it doing that. I practically have to give more gas when I cruise because the rpms drop and when I go up a hill it will keep bucking until I give it more gas. I have about figured out how to replicate it in over drive most often than in drive. It will does this while hot, and under load. I don't know if its the tcc solenoid, but whatever the thread suggest I am game to give it a shot.
95whitevert
I too am experiencing this bucking phenomenon. My cutlass vert (3.4 engine) just started acting up about two weeks ago. Cruising around 50ish, I give her a little gas and then the fun starts. I now just keep it in 3rd while on the highway and while it still bucks every now and then, the car is somewhat drivable. Since the car still bucks in 3rd and not in OD, it isn't a tranny issue for me so I am now purchasing parts for a tune up. The car has 91k miles so it is time anyway. Man, those ACDelco spark plug wire sets for the 3.4 engine are quite pricey.

95whitevert
Well, I replaced the spark plugs and wires and cleaned out the three front spark plug holes (not sure what to call them) since the front head gasket is leaking a bit and coated the cylinders with a bit of oil and presto, no more bucking. Back on the road....
