hermannm
Hi i just recently put a new engine in my car 1992 cutlass supreme. Same as the old one 3.1 V6. The engine came out of a buick and had a different trans in it as we had to move the passanger size trans mount and cut it a bit to make it fit. I never had any trans problem before the swap and now when it i am slowing down and it downshifts into first it makes a big bang. It seems to go away after the car warms up. I have disconnected the trans cable that goes from the TB to the trans but still have the problem. I didn't do the proper idle relearn procedure on the car could this be causing the problem? Only other thing i can think of is the torque convertor is pulled out a bit or a bent ring gear? Im not sure any help would be appreciated. Thanks!! Crazy K
wait... what? did you replace the 3.1 with another 3.1?
hermannm
Yes i just did a straight swap. I blew the head on the original so i just did a straight swap to get it running again.
Crazy K
and to make sure, you aren't thinking a 3.1 and 3100 are the same? what was the donor vehicle? I guess you lost the bracket that was attached to the original engine??? there are 3 cables at the throttle in a 92 3.1 car with a 4t60e: accelerator: bottom, with a clip cruise: IT has a loonnggg slot in it and downshift. the downshift cable goe on the TOP connector bung and has a plastic clip (some might have a metal clip). check for it being connected. next thing that may be needed is an adjustment for the cable... but I don't know how to do it, I would have to look it up later. hermannm
No they are the exact same engine. it came out of a buick regal. i did lose the original bracket. I thought the trans downshift cable was the one with the little black connector on it and the long slot one is connected to the accelotor cable? RobertISaar
92 3.1s didn't have the 4t60e, had vaccum based 4t60(440T4)

hermannm
Its only downshifting into first and when i accelerate extremely hard it has hard upshifts
Crazy K
what year regal? a 92 CS with 3.1 will have a 4t60 (non E) unless it has a 3t40. a 88-92 regal with 3.1 will have a 4t60 non e, and a 93 3.1 will have a 4t60e if the cable is hooked, it may need adjusted. OR it is a vacuum modulator issue. make sure the hose line is hooked up.
RobertISaar
no way is it from a 93 or later, the shift solenoids would never move, meaning he would be in 3rd(?) gear all the time.
hermannm
I will try adjusting the cable and check the vacuum line thanks. The buick was a 1990 or 1992 i think but it did have a different transmission. I have the downshifter completely off right now, thought it might help?? It did yesterday when i was driving around after the car was warm, never downshifted hard. Ill also try tightening the Air Cleaner down cause i can hear a hissing sound when the car is running. Thanks again.
