5speedz34 Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 A year and a half ago I had everything in the power steering system was replaced. Rack, Tie Rods, Pump, and all the hoses and lines. The pump was a rebuilt NAPA unit. I had a shop do all the work. Since I got the car back, occasionally I will loose all or some power assist. This usually happens when I'm parking or anytime I have the wheel at lock. My car gets parked on a super busy street that I have to parallel park on and that's where I get most of my issues. Last summer I rebled the system and I although I got a ton of air bubbles I still had issues. It does seem like its not as bad as before. I rebled the system last night turning the wheel 50 or so times. When I went to start the car the pump was very very whiney (this pump has always been loud ) almost to the point where it seemed like it was oil starved? Tonight I went to parallel park and again I lost assist. So onto my question, does it sound like maybe my pump is bad? Quote
5speedz34 Posted June 4, 2009 Author Report Posted June 4, 2009 Ya I'm pretty sure there is a lifetime warranty. I don't want to go through the trouble of replacing it just to find out it wasn't the issue. Do aftermarket pumps tend to be loud? Quote
Crazy K Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 I don't know. if you have a whine, try to isolate it to the pump for sure; you might pop the serp belt off and check all the pulleys. and if it IS warrentied.... get it replaced. Quote
5speedz34 Posted June 4, 2009 Author Report Posted June 4, 2009 I need to check all the pulleys for an unrelated issue but I'm 100% sure its the pump that's whining. Quote

No I know how to check pulleys but I know for sure the whining is coming from the PS pump. Quote
White93z34 Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 I had a advance auto reman pump on my bonneville give me all sorts of crap, whining seemed like it had less power at slower speeds, replaced it with a used OEM pump and that was the end of my problems. Quote

I don't know if I want to mess with a used pump. But if I do put one on the plus side is I don't have to transfer the pulley. Quote
