Is this at all normal?

I'm not sure if I have a tranny problem, or a faulty TPS, but here's what happens:

Let's say I'm accelerating at a normal pace, I get to about 20-25 MPH, then I hit the gas HARD to about FULL-throttle, the engine/transmission will NOT respond at all for about 1-1.5 seconds, then all of a sudden it reacts and the RPM's shoot to like almost 6000!!!

Is this "normal"?? It's pretty annoying, but I kinda understand WHY it would happen, I mean, going from like 10%-90% throttle in 1 second is gonna force the engine/tranny to be a little behind the speed of your foot...right?

Could I have "dead spots" in my TPS, or could it be slow to increase voltage?

THANKS AGAIN!:)

Dude.. mine does that all the time. I don't think it is normal.. but I haven't had the time to check on it, so I just take 'er easy. Sometimes, it almost sounds like the engine has to 'wind up' and then the tranny will kick down and take off.

your RPMs Shouldnt shoot to 6K, but as for it taking a little bit to respond to your Throttle, that is normal. I dont know about a whole second, but it is somewhat normal. I mean, at 25mph, you are in 3rd gear, and going to like 90% Throttle will make the tranny downshift all the way to 1st gear. So, yes, it should hesitate a little, so that the tranny and engine have time to spool up.

I see that being normal, yes. But in my case, I guess it would have to be something a person would have to feel for themselves. It just takes much longer than it actually should for it to kick down and go. Sorry.. I'm not tryin to steal your thread.. its all yours now :)

No answers yet? I would have to say my throttle reacts late (about a sec or so) as well. Then the engine races without the tranny shifting into a "good" gear to get moving. Another fun thing is that when I am going up hill or the car is accelerating the A/C throttles back. It was a fun summer trip from San Antonio to Kansas City with the A/C cutting out on every texas and oklahoma hill. Fortunately, Kansas is flat for the most part.

So everyone seems to think that this lag in the throttle and the racing engine is normal. Does anyone know of a way to make our vehicles less "normal"? I would be forever endebted to you.

Thanks,

Timo

  • 3 weeks later...

I don't think that is normal at all. My 3.1 with 260,000k reacts instantly without any lag and my tranny is by no means strong.

Could it be that you were at like 60kph/35mph and jammed the gas so hard that it jumped to first, which might give you that second or so of lag and high rpm?????

Just a drunken thought. :D  :D

it's normal, the tranny takes some time to down shift, and if the engine revs really high while in between that, when the tranny puts it in to gear, it's going to do very bad things to your tranny, basically it's like doing a neutral drop... not too healthy... if you want your car to move as soon as you chomp on the gas, get a 5 speed
