gmrulz4u
I can just tell that there is SOMETHING strange going on with the steerting in my 89 Supreme... 3 months ago I went to get a 4-wheel alignment, I knew ahead of time that they will NOT try to align the car if there is ANYTHING wrong with any steering/suspension components. So, I actually went thinking that I wouldn't even end-up having the alignment done because I was expecting and assuming that they would come out and say "you've got worn xxxx" or whatever...but, that didn't happen, and they said that all components "looked good". So they went ahead and did the alignment... I ended-up going back 2 more times because the alignment did NOTHING to fix my f'ed-up steering... It's hard to explain, but I'll try my best... First off all, the steering is messed...driving straight, I hold the wheel to the left, but sometimes to the right, and when stopping I'll have to hold it one way or the other...I think the term for it is "loose" and "erratic"...it makes no sense and has no memory or something...on top of this, when I'm doing a left-turn and have the wheels cranked all the way, the front-end gets this strange "wobbly" feel...it's really crazy...on top of this, I think my steering rack makes too much noise when turning...and I feel that it's in the rack itself...because my steering fluid has been completely changed, the power steering pump is New, I've tried Lucas Power Steering Fix etc...but nothing gets rid of the "groaning" noise, and it doesn't just do it during hard turns, it does it whenever I'm going slow(less than 10 MPH), no matter what the turning angle is... Now, here's an even crazier thing...I think whatever is wrong is causing my transmission to up-shift hard...especially the 1-2...because if I do NOT hold the wheel at all while accelerating, and just let it go off/drift to one side, it will shift fine...if I try to hold the wheel and force the car to move straight, it will shift strange, and not good at all... Could this be an axle problem? Or CV joints on there way out...?? I read a lot online that says an easy way to determine bad CV joins is if there is a "CLUNK WHEN STARTING TO DRIVE/ACCELERATE AFTER COASTING". My car has done this for well over a year now...what I think it means is when you're coasting, with your foot off the gas completely, going, lets say 30 MPH, and then you hit the gas to start to accelerate again, it makes a CLUNK...well, this is exactly what mine is doing... It's just really got me baffled...especially since this retarded-ass place I went to a couple months ago to get the alignment done says everything "looks fine"?? I feel like I paid $80(CDN) to get an un-needed alignment, because it made NO difference...but this is a whole other story... ANYONE?? THANKS:)
92turboLE
does your car make a grinding noise at all??? it could be your wheel bearings... mine are shot to shit and my car has the same charectoristics, only without the moan. it wabbles when trying to drive straight, i have to move the wheel all over the damn place to keep it straight. I also get that popping.cllunk noise, but only when turning sharp at low speeds, like in a parking lot, almost like something is binding up and then releasing - resulting in that clunk noise... something you might want to check out. - Justin

Brian P
the steering problem sounds like the power assist piston is worn out in the rack. The other things, I dunno, check your tranny fluid level, and stop looking for problems so small on a '89. Want my '89?

gmrulz4u
dude ure car is a lemon What kind of stupid fuckin' response is that?? You only wish YOU had my car...sorry for wanting to actually take care of mine and fix what's wrong! My paint costs me $3,000, stereo/DVD set me back over $3,000, I have 4 AutoMeter Lunar gauges that costs more than you've probably ever spent on your car, 2 Dakota Digital Voltmeters, exhaust work, etc...etc...I've owned my car for just over 3 years and have put so many hours of hard work, and thousands of dollars into it, that I don't need some idiot that's only driving a 91 Cutlass because it was handed-down to him, or because he's saving to buy a Civic, telling ME anything about MY car... My Mobil 1 Synthetic oil changes probably cost more than you're willing to spend on your Cutlass, so why make stupid comments because you're car sucks?? Brian P
seriously...who wants it? I know on both my cars, if I hear a strange erratic noise and it goes away, first I check the gauges to see if everything's in working order, then I check my rearview mirror for a trail of smoke, then I ask myself "Is the car still rolling on the ground? Is it still in one driveable piece? Are all windows still on the car?" After I say yes to all these questions, I forget about it

per0781
u spend all that money on accessories on ure car, why dont u spend that money on ure car first to get it running right. Ure car has had more problems than GM thought a Cutlass Supreme could have. And yes I run full synthetic oil in my car. People on here have seen my car at the Massachusetts meet last summer, and I keep it running good and clean. PLUS my car has the KBPP. gmrulz4u
LOL Good job going back almost a year to find old posts about problems I HAD... Sorry but I didn't want to list everything I have replaced and repaired on the fuckin' car...I can if you want me to... As for the moron that says my car "doesn't work", that's quite funny...where did I say it didn't work? Of course everyone that drives my car would say there's no problem, and the fact is I don't have any major or continues problems, I'm just a perfectionist that WAS under the impression that everyone on this board actually CARED about their car, but it appears that as long as it's fuckin' running, you're happy?? Strange... When Brian P told me that my Headlight Switch was faulty, I didn't hesitate in going to buy a brand-new one the next day, but from the way everyone on here is talking, it seems like most of you just don't give a shit about your cars... If a car is running 95% perfect, should it just be left alone??? I thought that trying to fix the other 5% made sense, but I guess the year of my car dictates whether it's a "good idea", as if I'm one day going to actually try and sell the car to someone else...whatever... The fact is, 90% of the people using this board, do so because they HAVE to drive a fuckin' W-Body, not because they WANT TO! I think that's the difference between the two groups of people that use this damn forum...some people work hard, spend money, and actually PAID for their car, while other just got theirs for free from their grandma or grandpa, and are just hanging out on here until they go do the "cool" thing and buy a used Honda, Toyota or Nissan... And, Brian P, where the hell did you get the idea that I drove a Maroon Regal?? I drive a white 89 Cutlass Supreme(International)...don't worry, the pics are coming...I've taken some but the pics just didn't turn out as good as I hoped, so I'm getting a new camera... gmrulz4u
I will admit ONE thing, I am SO mis-understood when it comes to Forums... I think I have a tendancy to exaggerate problems that I experience, in an attempt to make it seem MORE important, or more of a problem than it actually is... For example, my 1-2 upshift that I THINK is harsh, most of you may not even feel...or think twice about, but when I post a question about it, it comes off sounding WORSE than it actually is... Like I said, I'm a perfectionist in everything, and I guess I should be black-listed from the Forum...
Redfox340
No, it's good that you ask such questions. Believe I have that same personality trait of wanting everything my way: perfect. 91GranSport
Dude, what's worse? Your '89 or my '91? My drives fine but needs well over $3,000 worth of stuff. 91GranSport
Relax dude. Let's concentrate on trying to find the source of your problem. I think your steering problem and your transmission problem are totally separate. I find it difficult to see how those problems can be tied in together or remotely related. You may need a new steering rack or steering gears. As far as your transmission is concerned, which one do you have? 4T60? I'm guessing you either have the 4T60 or 4T60-E. I'm not going to get involved in this flame war. I've been involved with enough flame wars in the past with Hazmatic and such I think I've had enough to last me a year. BTW: You've spend $6,000+ on your vehicle and I seriously hope you enjoy it. That's a shitload of cash. I wish I had $2,500 for a new paint job plus bodywork. Or even $1,000 for new tires. Sheeeeeit! As far as oil changes go, I use Valvolin MaxLife 10W30 in the summer and MotoMaster Formula 1 0W30 semi-synthetic in the winter. Plus MotoMaster Formula 1 oil filters. dude ure car is a lemon What kind of stupid fuckin' response is that?? 91GranSport
Different people treat their vehicles differently. I wouldn't go out purchase an in-car DVD player for $3,000 but I definitely would spend decent money for an outstanding job on bodywork and refinishing. At the moment, I know every single problem with my vehicle and I'm working on fixing each one as soon as I get the time and money to do so. To me simply being able to go from point A to point B isn't enough. If I wanted that I'd take public transportation. Considering I purchased my vehicle for $6,700 I would definitely want it to last another 5 years or so. But like I said, everyone treats their vehicles differently... seriously...who wants it? I know on both my cars, if I hear a strange erratic noise and it goes away, first I check the gauges to see if everything's in working order, then I check my rearview mirror for a trail of smoke, then I ask myself "Is the car still rolling on the ground? 91GranSport
Dude, I simply wish I can throw in half the money you spend on your car into mine. $3,000 paintjob plus a $3,000 in-car DVD player plus all that other shit? Damn. All I need is about $4,500 on my car. I'm not going to list everything I need done because I think I complain about it often enough. Either way, my car runs damn good and I'm proud it does. I also care a lot about my car which is why I baby it. Even though it has the robust 3800 TPI V-6 and the 4T60, I still take very good care of it. So there are the few of us here that actually care about our cars. Forget abotu some of the members here who only want their car running on 4 cylinders instead of 6. That's their shit, not yours or mine. Basically what you're saying is that members here are divided into two categories: W-Body Enthusiasts and W-Body Owners Obviously I'd be a W-Body enthusiast. I can't speak for everyone else here but I bought my W-Body out of choice. This is my second W-Body car. My first was an '89 Regal Custom Coupe. Now I have a '91 Regal GranSport Sedan. My next W-Body will be probably be a Gen2 Olds Intrigue or Regal GranSport. Of course everyone that drives my car would say there's no problem, and the fact is I don't have any major or continues problems, I'm just a perfectionist that WAS under the impression that everyone on this board actually CARED about their car, but it appears that as long as it's fuckin' running, you're happy?? 91GranSport
Dude, I couldn't agree more. When you care about something a lot, you want it to always work perfectly. I want my vehicle to work perfectly, or as best as it can despite it's age, and I'm working towards that. If I had more time and money hell yeah my car would be damn good. No, it's good that you ask such questions.Believe I have that same personality trait of wanting everything my way: perfect.
