Guest TurboSedan
i went to Buffalo, WY today and was all set to pull a Getrag 282 out of an '88 Grand Prix with 140,xxx miles. they told me it was a known good transmission, and told me $320 for everything including the axles, shifter, cables, pedals, clutch hydraulics etc. i only needed the transaxle itself tho, so i was going to offer them $250 for it. when i told them what i needed they said they already have a Getrag 282 from a 110,xxx mile '88 Grand Prix in thier 'school bus' storage shed, and we went to take a look at it. it was alot cleaner than i thought, WAY cleaner than the blown one in my car right now was when i bought it. i checked the shaft play and intermediate shaft play and they felt GREAT. i shifted thru all the gears with my hands on the shifter brackets and it all felt normal. the fluid was drained for EPA reasons (a tag on the tranny said 'fluid good' and identified it from an '88 GP), but the dipstick was clean with no particles or anything on it. the only damage was that the clutch fork was FUBAR, which caused the clutch disc to fall off and grind a bit of metal off of the case inside the bellhousing area on the bottom. it took a small chunk of the webbing along with it. no biggie, it's small enough not to cause ANY weakness IMO. there are no cracks ANYWHERE on the case (unlike my blown Getrag 282 had when i bought it). and then it was time to ask how much. he told me $200, and i was thinking 'hell yeah i don't even have to get dirty or do any work pulling it out of a car AND it has lower miles than the one i was planning on getting'. then i asked if he'd take $160 cash since there was some minor damage from the clutch disc grinding into the case, and i had to reuse my clutch fork. he went for it! and not only that it's gauranteed for 60 days!!! i'm going to have the tranny in the car this month, so if it has a problem i can just bring it back. they are really nice guys there - i've bought alot of parts from them. so i was at the salvage yard for about 1/2 hour and driving out with a good Getrag 282 w/110,xxx miles AND a warranty for $160.....needless to say i'm VERY HAPPY joshua

LukeZ34
Good steal! Speaking of dipsticks... Kenny, did that 282 you put in the TGP have a dipstick or not? I never noticed that it never had one till the other week when I was changing the oil.

iTurbo
Right on! When are you coming back to Laramie to put it in? Are you buying a new clutch, or just a new throw-out bearing?

Guest TurboSedan
ok tell me what you guys think about this. i sprayed concentrated Simple Green all over the Getrag 282 last night to clean it up. i then decided to take it to the car wash and degrease it there (i think it's just dilluted SG). then i high pressure blasted the piss out of it (tranny is VERY clean now), but i made very sure not to spray into the axle holes or input shaft and intermediate shaft areas. i would have stuffed rags in the axle holes but didn't have any handy so i just said fuck it and just be careful. is this going to hurt anything? i drained the little degreaser & water that got in the trans but i plan on flushing (probably several times) with GM Syncromesh (fricking $10/qt). i'll probably drive it like 20 miles and dump the Syncromesh and refill with new Syncromesh. then keep doing that if the fluid looks wierd. any input welcome..... joshua
iTurbo
I've heard that Pennzoil makes their own version of Synchromesh, and it's only about $5-6 a quart. If your going to flush and refill, might as well try to save some money. Just flush it all out right away within the first 100 miles and it should be good to go. Guest TurboSedan
cool. at least the Getrag 282's capacity is only 2.1 quarts. joshua

Yeah it has a dipstick...go in through the drivers side wheel well with the steering wheel cranked all the way to the right. Much easier to get to with the tire off. Make sure you ONLY use Syncromesh in that tranny. The tranny will scratch 3rd with anything else!
Guest TurboSedan
i just check my tranny fluid in the Getrag 282 by taking the air box off and reaching down to the dipstick. i suppose that would hard to do with a turbo and ABS in the way huh :? guess i'll have to change my method of checking tranny fluid soon.... joshua
Justin
I turn the wheels all the way to the left and reach in over the left CV. Haven't checked the 284 in the Z yet though, works on the 282 in the Cutlass.
LukeZ34
Ohh, i see. I wasn't planning on changing it, I was just curious as to if there was a dipstick. I'll have to look for it some day.
