A 3400 top end will also fit as will the 3100 but when you put Gen 3 engine parts on a 3.1L you will usually have to get custom push rods to get the correct valve lash.

Ive read that even with porting you cant get a 3100 upper and lower to flow as well as a 3400 stock, but from what Im hearing just doing a 3100 top end swap might be easier and since this my daily driver Ill prob only have a day or 2 to do the swap.

I have to agree with Crazy K. If it were me I'd just find a good 3400 and drop the whole engine in your car. If you used the injectors from your engine you wouldn't necessarily have to tune it. It would run better than your 3.1 but you would need to tune it to get the full potential of the 3400. The Gen 3 is a much better engine as a stock 3100 has something like 15 more HP than the 3.1 iirc.

SO even with just swapping over to a 3100 top end Id need a custom tune? I mena I know Ill need a tune anyway when I go to different injectors but I was sort of holding off on that. Would it be reliable enough to drive until i can get it in to be tuned after a 3100 top end swap?

It should run fine with your original injectors but you won't be able to get the most out of it until it is tuned. The best 3100 top end to use would be from a 2000+ engine because the ports are the same size as a 3400. 95-99 3100s have a smaller port and the power increase will not be as great.
