xtremerevolution
It seems like the more I work on my car, the more noises it makes. there's a new one that came about recently. everything is fine going forward. If I put the car in reverse and drive, its fine. however, when I hit the brake while going in reverse, I hear a clunk somewhere near the wheels. i'm getting the impression its from the front wheels, although i'm not 100% sure. Any ideas? This started happening a couple of days after I replaced all 3 engine mounts, but not the transmission mount.

CSI_MuNkY
check your caliper bolts? x2 I had a caliper bolt break when I first got the car, it made a clunking sound too. The place I got the car replaced it at no charge. Jamie
xtremerevolution
i'll check those again, but I also replaced the front pads and the two of the 4 caliper bolts 2 weeks ago when I painted the calipers red. I double-checked to make sure that they were all tight too.
mra32
check the pads too...but i forget how the fronts look, so that might not be possible to make a noise like that. But the more i work on my car, the more sounds go away...but sometimes i get frustrated and become a ruffian (or have my brother help me) and i can almost be garunteed that i'll have to come back next week and fix something else. xtremerevolution
Alright, now I can feel the that bonk on the car when I brake. Its not just a noise. Something isn't quite right, and it pisses me off. In addition, my poly sway bar bushings are dry and are creaking as well, so I need to find some grease for those. In addition, the steering is creaking. Not sure what this is caused by, but its been getting gradually worse for the past 60,000 miles. I never bothered with it till now. Its really damn annoying. Also, when I rock the car back and forth while the engine is in park, there is a creaking noise coming from the engine bay. I've narrowed it down to very possibly the exhaust flange gasket. I know its been leaking for a while, as smoke leaks from somewhere around there when I seafoam my car. So here's what I need help with. First off, has anyone had any of these issues before, and if so, how did you fix it? I have a suspicion the steering creaking is from the spring seat bearings. Any idea on how those get replaced, and how difficult it is to do so? Do these commonly go bad on high mileage w-bodies? At a minimum I need to remove my entire strut and get a coil spring compressor, which could be a royal PITA that I'd like to avoid if at all possible. By far the most important things right now are that bonk when I brake going in reverse, and that exhaust flange gasket. It looks really cramped back there and it might be a bit difficult to get to it.
mra32
for the steering noise, reference the thread i made about mine. It includes a video. http://www.w-body.com/forum/index.php?topic=75676.0 The conclusion I came to is that the steering rack bolts needed to be tightened. I did a half ass job at it and it made the squeaks go away, but I have to get at it again and i think unbolting the sway bar is the way to go
tornado_735
Lower ball joints getting loose perhaps? I know I got one getting bad in my Jeep, and it clunks.
xtremerevolution
Lower ball joints getting loose perhaps? I know I got one getting bad in my Jeep, and it clunks. I just installed poly control arm bushings and made sure those were tight when I reassembled everything.
