Olds W31
So, I have been "nursing" the sometimes failing, sometimes not 94 Cutlass 3100 4t60e back and forth to work for a loooonggg time, when yesterday it finally decided to not shift into OD....then, on the way home (20+ miles each way), no consistant Drive.... It has done this before, and seemed to right itself (I know, I know, its a matter of time, but there are NO 5 spd cars around and THAT is what I really want!). Tonight, on the way home, running in 2nd at around 3800-4000 rpm....and I come to a stoplight and it kinda ...hiccups....then, shuts down. Okay, I thought, figures it would do this....cranked it up, drove to the nearest parking lot...nearly made it, then it dies again....this time for good. Cranked over, seemed to have fuel (poked the Schraeder valve on the fuel rail and got liquid gasoline). Really bummed now, but decided it was safe to leave, and I am walking distance from home. Walk to the house, grab my minivan, tow chain, and slightly tipsy wife (not in that order), and drive all back to the seemingly dead Olds.... I decide, just before I finish the chain hook up, to try it one last time....OF COURSE! it fires right up, and I drove it home! So, after you endured that....any ideas as to what failed. There are no codes, and no evidence of any obvious problem. I thought by the way it cranked that I might have failed the timing chain, but it drove home and ran good...in 2nd gear.... Thanks for any input.
ManicMechanic
i will be doing some junkyarding in the Leander/Lampasas area tomorrow...I've found several 5 speed Ws in years back and I will keep an eye open for you. I would check your fuel pressure. Then your ICM.
Brian P
Yeah, I'd say x2 either ICM or possibly the crank sensor.
Crazy K
the "nursing" a transmission may be cured by adding a transmission cooler. the 4t60e seems to need one badly.
Olds W31
I think I am well beyond the cooler stage....it seems to behave worse when cold (tolerances are bigger, pressure is lower) then gets "better" (seems like a misrepresentation) as it gets warmer. If I install a new (to me) auto...it will get the big "plate" cooler treatment!
ManicMechanic
No 5 speeds today...Barely any W bodies at all to be honest.
ManicMechanic
Very unlikely but not out of the question that these... http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/pts/1157933905.html http://oklahomacity.craigslist.org/cto/1158430137.html COULD be a 5 speed.
