w-bodys_are_the_best
I have my new longblock, but it says nothing in the papers and crap about an exact year. I need some info on some loose ends to get this thing put together so I can drop it in my Cutlass. What year did the 3.4 get the cam sensor? My crate longblock has the sensor, and my old motor (91) obviously doesn't. I thought it was 94, but not sure. What year did they start mounting the coils on top? I noticed I do not have the threaded holes on my crate block to mount the coils in the old location (under front exhaust manifold). From pictures I could find, the 94s still had them below, but 96 didn't, I couldn't find 95 pics. I was planning on changing the mount location to the top anyways. What all is needed to do this? I would like to pick this stuff up friday at one of the local yards. I will also be ordering some new parts from gmpartsdirect and rockauto. Is there any other key changes to look at that will give me an idea as to exactly what year this engine is? I am pretty sure the block is in the 95-97 range, but not sure past that. If anyone wants to see pictures of it and can tell anything from them, here is my new engine pic album: http://s61.photobucket.com/albums/h72/zkelleybucket/crate%20LQ1/ Will I have any trouble using my 91 upper and lower intake manifolds on the newer block? I'm trying to get a list of parts needed to put the new block together, new parts and parts I can get from the yard. If I had my choice I'd be getting a lot more new parts than used, but money is tight, and I have 3 other vehicles to fix. What do you guys use to clean up aluminum? I'd like to clean up the plenum and trans case a bit. I'll also be cleaning up the accesories and their mounts as much as I can.
ManicMechanic
1. 1994 2. 1996, lengthening a few wires and getting an ICM mount is all, as far as I know. 3. likely is 1996-1997. 4. Shouldn't.

w-bodys_are_the_best
Thanks, I'll probably get an ICM mount and just go with a newer set of wires.
GOT2B GM
the 96+ ICM/coil mounting location will interfere with the 91-95 MAP sensor location. I would only use the 96+ ICM/coil location if using an entire 96+ top end IMO

I found a new bracket on gmpartsdirect $16.47, but then I read this. New question, Can I use a 96-97 upper and lower intake? I assume since I need the map sensor, probably not. GOT2B GM
You need to get the entire swap (coolant lines, fuel lines, TB arm, everything) off of a donor car. Jamie and I removed an entire setup off of a 97 Z34 in about an hr.

I'd like to switch to the 96-97 style IIRC they flow better also, but seeing how I don't have any 96-97 LQ1 vehicles in yards within 100 miles, I may just have to find a way to mount mine somewhere else. slick
I took the ICM bracket, flipped it upside down, put just a slight more bend in it, and put a piece of aluminum to space it a bit. I then opened up the wire loom, pulled the harness out as much as possible, and lengthened where necessary. Truthfully, I would not recommend this spot if the car does a lot of winter/wet weather driving. However, if this is just a leisure car, then having them in this spot prevented me from ever having issues with heat soak.
w-bodys_are_the_best
Is that the old style bracket? I've always planned on relocating them in my Z24 also (3.1) but have never moved them from under the manifold. The Cutlass will never see snow again, maybe rain, but It'll mostly be a summer car, will start taking it to some meets when it's reliable enough. It will be stored every winter, I moved here and have a huge garage, and the ability to store 3 to 4 cars here, but I'm currently renting a garage from an elderly lady in Osage for $20 a month. My woman said there was no need to hang on to that place, but I also have to store the cadilac over the winter, so I'm keeping it. I will probably try your idea, or something close to it. Is that a 1/2 inch spacer? Were you able to use a regular wire set?

One problem you will face is what to do with the EGR... since they are different.

The spacer, yeah probably half inch. That's been like 5-6 years now, so truthfully, I don't remember all of the exacts. Wires plugged right in. We just opened up the wire loom, pull the correct wires out, closed up the loom, and plugged it all in. In fact, now that I think about it, we didn't even lengthen any wires. w-bodys_are_the_best
Good deal, I have a set of good coils/ICM/bracket off my 94 cutlass's 3100, I'll have to see what I can Come up with.
slick
If you don't have the factory airbox, I have also seen people mount there coils on the plate that the airbox sits on.
w-bodys_are_the_best
I do as of now, but that is going to change, I'll have to keep that in mind also. I was also wondering if there is room to mount them in the 96+ location if I make my own bracket. The guy at the yard in Rochester said there wasn't much to the 96+ bracket he had (flat with a bend on one end) so maybe I can make something.
