Unconcerned

Recommended Posts

I recently removed the engine/trans from my 88 grand prix to seal up the leaky joints in the transmission case halfs and was somewhat suprised to find no pilot bearing behind my clutch. Some searching in my haynes manual shows a flywheel pilot bearing but the flywheel pictured doesnt resemble my flywheel and I've been unable to find any other info on the topic, nor any parts places or even a dealer that can tell me if the car even has a bearing. A internet search for a new clutch has shown a few clutch kits that offer pilot bushings but no part numbers to use and since my clutch is brand new I dont care to replace it. I measured the end of the input shaft and the interior pocket in the end of the crankshaft and there is a gap there but its only about enough room for a bushing and the flywheel doesnt look like it would accept a bearing.

So my question is, does my vehicle have a pilot bearing/bushing? I've only ever done clutch jobs on semi's and they all have pilot bearings the size of my cars release bearing XP

I was a little concerned about this too when I did my clutch job, but according to the sources here, no there is no pilot bearing.

That would explain why I cant find one...makes me feel a little better about how it was run without one at least :P Guess i've just lost my excuse to not put the engine/trans back in the car.

Now that I think about it, when I pulled it all apart I noticed the camshaft cover at the rear of the engine was leaking pritty badly. After looking for a new gasket (Mine had one) and being unable to find one I did a search and could only find one persons answer responding that on his 2.8 fiero there was no gasket and it was sealed up with good ol sealant. I did the same, but before I throw it back together I wouldnt mind finding out if its going to hold up. Also, the slave cylinder pushrod that pushs on the release fork of my car seems alot smaller than the cup it sits in, is that normal or is there a peice missing between the 2?

My haynes manual doesnt quite spell it all out for me like I'd prefer and since the clutch was done a month before I bought the car and the CV shaft fell out i'd like to know I wont make the same mistakes the previous owner made. Thanks

No, 282 and 284 use no pilot bearing, lucky for us. Some cars that use a pilot bearing are harder to convert from auto to maunual because they sometimes use different cranks, and would have to be drilled for a pilot bearing.

The W body haynes manual sucks balls, IMO it was a complete waste of money, I have yet to actually use it. Try and find a GM FSM for your year car on Ebay. I picked up a 2 volume set for my 91 cutlass for under $35 and it was the best money I've spent.
