SrMichi Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 I just got all the parking brake cables yesterday from rock auto. After installing them i realize something was not right. it seems like the cables are ether too short or too long. when i connected them at the adjuster the whole thing hangs quiet a bit and the parking brake does not work well at all. the front and left back cables are too long and the right side cable too short. Maybe the adjuster pieces need to be different? Ill take a pic during lunch to show you guys how low it hangs Quote
RobertISaar Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 wow, thats worse than me... but i never replaced mine yet. if the right one is too short, and the left and front too long, can you try moving it to the right and farther back. i don't remember if there are brackets or anything but it should be tight against the floorpan when released and you shouldn't be able to move it much if at all when engaged or at least thats my experience with drums in back, i don't know if its any different with disks(did the early luminas come with disks)? Crazy K Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 damn that is a hard question to answer... I have seen cables hang down like that a few times... it may be an adjustment issue. Quote
Hairdo12 Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 Your adjuster nut is all the way at the end of the threaded portion of the cable. Move the bolts in towards where the threads connect to the cable. The threaded portion of the cable should almost be entirly inside the adjuster bracket. PS, look at those pretty rocker panels. Quote
SrMichi Posted April 29, 2009 Author Report Posted April 29, 2009 i try moving but i had no luck. i guess I'll have to cut the left rear cable and housing and then it would move the adjuster back and then the right one should be okay. yeah i think they did but with many problems Quote

RobertISaar Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 can someone explain in a simpler way what the hell went wrong? is it a part built out of spec or what? Quote
Hairdo12 Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 You have a ton of slack, it should be pretty easy. Loosen up the nuts on the bracket, grab the bracket and pull it back towards the rear of the car and let the cable threads move into the bracket. Spin the nut down the threads and repeat. The cable will indeed go up alot. After a few pulls of the ebrake you may need to make another slight adjustment as the cable will stretch a little. I have one nut on the outside of the bracket and another on the inside so once I get it adjusted correctly I can tighten it down. And no, adjusting this will not make the ebrake drag as there is fixed mounting points on the calipers. Quote

RobertISaar Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 since its related: does having tension on the parking brake cable allow the rear brakes to adjust themselves due to wear? its something certain vehicles have but i'm not sure if it pertains to w-bodys... Quote
SrMichi Posted April 30, 2009 Author Report Posted April 30, 2009 well I'm back and i was able to do it now there is no slack. i had no time to check if everything is moving smoothly but i think it is. thanks for the help Quote
