2buickbob
Hi, folks. You remember that I bought this on e-bay a month or so ago. The door handle kit I bought is fine. In the old one, it was the spring that had broken. Here's what's happening now. The door handle worked for a while. Now, it just stopped. It opens from the interior handle, though. I opened the door side cover panel and watched the mechanical parts. I pull on the exterior one and see the rods move. I pull on the interior one and I feel a little extra motion/range, but not much. What do you think might have happened? Is there an adjustment?
AL
yes there is an adjustment, but i dont know how to explain it
jman093
Yes there's an adjustment. The rod that is actually moved by the handle is threaded on top. The clip that attaches to the handle can screw up and down on it. Screw it upward a little bit, not too much or you won't ever get it unlocked after it locks the first time. You will be pisssssssssssseddddd if you adjust it too far. Awesome tip Jman!!!
AL
when i adjusted mine, i sat inside the car so if i adjusted to much then i could still open the door
carkhz316
Ya, but if you and adjust it too tightly AND then lock the door by some chance, then it won't matter if you're in or out. The door will be stuck closed.
GOT2B GM
Test run it before closing the door by locking the door, and manually flipping the door latch with your fingers to simulate the door closing. Then unlock the door, pull the handle and see if you can pull the latch open. If you do not have the door handle rod properly adjusted, it will not allow the door to fully unlock after the first time you lock it, and you will NOT be able to open your door, from the outside OR the inside. Happened to me once, and I ended up having to cut the door handle off of the car to get it to open.

I'm at work right now and don't have the "visuals" here (it's at the transit station). So, is it the (a) actual rod that will needed to moved upward by the threaded part, or (2) the metal clip that snaps on at the end and keeps the rod attached? This is great, guys. I'm not the most mechanical person, but I was able to actually put this assembly on, and it worked at first. That's the funny part...that it worked at first for about 2 to 3 weeks. Thanks. AL
If you can take the lower door handle shield off (to be able to see the rods) and take a pic and post it, I will circle exactly what we are talking about

The problem is still there. Driver's door pillar external door handle was replaced...by me and ordered on E-Bay. It worked initially. After about 2 weeks, driver's door opens from the INSIDE of the car to let me out, but does NOT open from the OUTSIDE of the car. Here are the pictures Al suggested I take and post. If you can circle the items, and you and others can walk me through it, that would be great. Thanks very much. Robert.
91LuminaEuro
I circled and put an arow to the small silver piece on that rod. That small piece is what will thread up and down the rod. That is what you will adjust. That piece goes through the handle and then that little black clip holds it to the handle. By adjusting it up the way everyone else has described this should enable you to make the outside door handle lock. Again heed the warnings of the others, too much adjust ment and it will make your life hell. When i adjusted mine, i did it by just spinning that piece one rotation at a time up the rod until the handle functioned properly.
Crazy K
every time I do this... i pull the complete rod and stretch it as regular use has compressed it. and as it compresses, it seems to compress (and shorten) faster. and yes, manually close the catch and loack and unlock the door, to make sure the mechanism isn't binding up. 91LuminaEuro
every time I do this... i pull the complete rod and stretch it as regular use has compressed it. How do you go about doing this? This actually makes sense i'm just curious as to how you do it. *EDIT: I mean the stretching part, i know how to remove the rod n such, just to clarify my question. So it looks like it's the round piece, and do it ONE turn at a time, making sure the door opens and closes with each incremental adjustment. It will be nice to have this fixed. 91LuminaEuro
Your best bet, would be to operate the locking mechanism with your hand or a screwdriver, leaving the door open, while adjusting it. After each adjustment work the lock one time to make sure it still works. Like the other guys said, if you adjust it too far, you will not be able to unlock the door, which will leave you stuck worse than you are now. This way by working the mechanism with the door open, if you adjust it too far, you can adjust it again to fix the problem.

Thank you very much. At first, I was looking at the circle on the picture and the opened-up door assembly. I was scratching my head. Then I figured out that the clip needed to come off and then I could start working with it. I took 1 turn at a time, making the rod longer (because the indoor door handle seemed to initially be "opening up more" than the exterior door handle). When they were "about equal" in feel, it worked. The door opens easily right now. Thanks! No more crawling in from the passenger side.
