daytonboi Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 Ok over the course of the next few weeks, I'm going to be some major work on the car. First I'm going to be redoing the gaskets, UIM, LIM, Head, And Water pump. (But that is another thread) http://www.w-body.com/forum/index.php?topic=78309.0 Then moving to the interior I need to change the headliner and mount my overhead console. Then I need to fix my turn signals since they won't cancel and I also need to fix my wiper switch since i burned the other one up. I also want to swap my steering wheel since I'll have it off anyway for one that has radio controls. I've looked at the other steering swap threads and I still have some questions. First one is will my 96 airbag fit a 2000 Camaro/Firebird wheel with steering wheel controls? I guess my real question is will my airbag fit any steering wheel with radio controls? I know someone got a Monte wheel for sale on here but I "kinda" wanted to keep the colors the same in the car. After i get the interior done for now I'm going to hook up my alarm and maybe work on my stereo some more. Then finally I scored me a hump spoiler for $40 shipped. I'm going to paint it and mount it once it gets here and then shine up my rear panel and remove the body side strips. Quote
Dirk_Diggler Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 The Firebird wheel is a different shape then the Camaro one so it's pointless to group them as one. I know that a Grand prix air bag wheel will interchange with 4thgen f-body both air bag and steering wheel controls. Hell the whole wheel will be a direct swap. If you car is a chevy chances are they used the same design as the Camaro. Quote
Crazy K Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 look in any gen 1.5 monte/lumina. some had steering wheel controls, some did not. go to the nearest Pick n Pull (cinci or columbus) and find one. if the bag is different, you will need to grab the bag with it. also, to make the steering wheel controls work, you will need the airbag clock spring, and the pigtail for the SWRC turn signal (you can de-pin and re-pin it rather the buying a new one. BETTER YET>>>>> go find a complete column with everything you want from the cheap j/ys. Quote
GP1138 Posted April 23, 2009 Report Posted April 23, 2009 I have a column complete with SWRC if you're interested. $40 for that - $50 with Olds wheel and controls. Quote
daytonboi Posted April 24, 2009 Author Report Posted April 24, 2009 Thanks for the offer I'mma think on it cause not going to do it right now the motor going to take a little more cash then was last thought ATM Quote

Dirk_Diggler Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 Take the base of a blown airbag the yard will most likely just give it to you. They take the cover off a good airbag from the yard. Take it home reassemble and shoot spray foam inside until it fills , presto. Quote

Unless he specifically wants a functional air bag, my method is better then molding a new face out of fiberglass (a ton less work too) or would you prefer to just drive around with a big hole in the center of the steering wheel and rub wires against each other when you need the horn?. The air bag is of no concern to me. Cars came without them for years, even w-bodys. It's also way to much money for a replacement. Quote

And there's a good reason they are standard on cars nowadays.... I can't imagine why anybody would sacrifice the airbag for SWRC. That seems totally asinine to me. Also, anybody on this board would I'm sure be happy to go pull an airbag from a yard or send him a functional one. Quote

Not sure about your area but even used airbags yards charge out the ass for here. Quote

But it became apparent that people would just never replace them since new ones were so expensive. Now that used ones are bought, more people can actually get their SRS system fixed properly. And newer SRS systems can easily detect a bad airbag.. However shops are not legally allowed to installed used ones.. Only the owner can and when the vehicle is sold, they must tell the new owners Quote
boymeetspavement Posted May 31, 2009 Report Posted May 31, 2009 Im not a fan of air bags. I remove them when possible or disable them. My ciera had a grant wheel so it wasnt a problem. Quote
