L67 Oil leak where to look

My bro has a 98 GTP with an oil leak. The back half of the block is pretty wet, and the other day we drove it back from Louisville to Binghamton. It's leaking minimal amounts of oil, but its bad enough that you can smell it and I actually could see it burning off the converter when we got home.

The surface around the pan looks wet, which may very well be the culprit, but just below the rear head and around one of the freeze plugs is wet too. I pulled the cover to expose the flexplate thinking it was the rear main, but it appears dry in there. I'm guessing its the rocker cover gasket, probably the lower intake is partly to blame too.

Can anyone give me info on the likelihood of the pan gasket failing? Also is is possible to remove it and replace it with the engine in the car? Any other common places for leaks on this beast? I'm not too familiar with these L67 common probs.

It's probably the valve cover gasket leaking, which is the cause of the L67 BBQs... GM issued a recall for the front valve cover gasket (but not the rear because they said it doesn't cause the BBQs (unless it changed since I heard about it), and if you search L67 recall, there is a thread here about it somewhere...

yeah I think he had the front recall done already, but the problem is the front half of the engine isn't the problem, its the rear!! Go figure.

Do you have any input about the lower intake gaskets on the s/c engine? Anyone? Are they shat or should I just leave 'em alone and do the rocker gasket and call it a day?

why would you not do both if you're going through the trouble? its hard enough to get the rear valve cover off, you might as well do the LIM too and make it easier to get to. it's not that much more for the gaskets, and consider it preventative maintnance.

leaking rear valve covers won't cause a fire? bullfuckingshit. if it leaks bad enough, it sure as fuck will. you prove to me that exhaust manifolds at 6-800*F won't get oil, with trace amount of gasoline due to the fact that PCV valves aren't perfect in operation, to ignite.

Drop the subframe or pull the engine for oil pan gasket.

I prefer dropping the subframe. I think it's easier.

x2 gotta drop the subframe to replace the pan gasket on an L-36 or L-67. My pan gasket is seeping now....gott get that done. My guess is that hes got a rear valve cover gasket leak....if yer smelling it. Its getting onto the rear manifold and burning. If I was him I'd get the rear valve cover gasket and pan gasket replaced anyways....if they havnt been done already. It's most likely where his problem is coming from anyways.
