chasin_shadowz Posted April 13, 2009 Report Posted April 13, 2009 I know that there are a couple tire posts, but I need your opinions. I'm going to get a new set of tires and am debating the following tires. The prices include mounting and balancing. Of course, tire size is the stock 245/50 R16. Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS for 140/tire Falken Ziex ZE-502 for 115/tire Kumho Ectsa AST for 100/tire Kumho Ectsa ASX for 120/tire I've heard rave reviews about the potenzas, but I'm debating that extra 160 over the cheapest. I've also read that the other three do well, but they wear down quicker. My biggest concern right now is how they do in the rain. I'm hoping that by winter, I'll have a truck so that I wont have to put the TGP through another winter. Quote
CSI_MuNkY Posted April 13, 2009 Report Posted April 13, 2009 Wear really depends on the tread rating Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS 400 AA A Falken Ziex ZE-502 300 A A Kumho Ectsa AST 400 A A Kumho Ectsa ASX 420 AA A Of them the Falkens are the softest and will wear the quickest, but they will grip the best. All but the ASX have a decent tread for shedding water, I would expect some hydro planing with that pattern. I wouldn't recommend any of them to be driven in the winter, depending where you are. What do you want out of the tires? Are they just going to be used as a DD commute? or do you plan on running these tires through their paces at the track, or in the corners? When I got tires I knew I wanted something that could take a corner to the best of the cars ability, the car is a seasonal car now so it will never even see slushy or icey conditions again. In the ends I picked the Hankook Ventus R-S2 Z212 245/45ZR16 ($113 each on tire rack). The rating on these tires are 200 AA A. Jamie Quote
jrcuttymann Posted April 13, 2009 Report Posted April 13, 2009 I would recommend the Bridgestones, although I would really consider the Bridgestone G019, Thats what i put on my CS last fall And they handled beautifully in the snow and on wet roads too. As far as treadwear rating you cannot tell between different brands as to which will last longer, as the treadwear number is best compared within the same brand of tire . If a certain tire has a treadwear rating of 320 it is not necessarily better than a treadwear rating of 300 of a different brand, actually the rating of 300 may actually be better than the 320, depending upon the brand of tire. so it is best to do some research and make an educated guess as to what tire is best for you. Tirerack is a very good place to make comparisons on tires, just make sure to read the reviews and make a decision and stick with it. Quote
jeremy Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 I love the Michelin Pilot Sports that I am running....not sure if they make them in that size though......they are a fantastic tire but the treadwear rating is only around 220 iirc Quote
cperna15 Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 hey i have goodyear assurance's, tripple tread brand new that i never put on that im selling 225/60/16, $500 for all 4 Quote
CSI_MuNkY Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 Goodyear Assurance triple tread - 740 A B Definitely NOT a performance tire like what he is looking for. And at $500 for 4 tires he would be paying more than buying those same tires from tirerack. Jamie Quote
cperna15 Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 really i just paid almost 650 at sears Quote
CSI_MuNkY Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 yeah, price on tirerack is $116 each ($464) add to that maybe about $60 shipping ($524) But you would have to ship them to him too... lol When I was shopping for performance tires I had a guy try to sell my on the Goodyear assurance triple tread "because my car was nothing special" I laughed at him and told him where to go. cperna15 Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 ahh it happens, i got the tires cause the look pretty agressive but now i need money to fix the car Quote
CSI_MuNkY Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 they would be good in the rain because of the tread design, but for actual grip on the road a 740 tire is WAY too hard. I bet they are a great DD tire, they probably last a long long time. Last year my tires were somewhere near a 400 A B and I could break them loose without trying. This year I have 200 AA A, the trans will break loose before the tires do, lol Jamie Quote
Crazy K Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 I had my brother buy two tires at sears... they were quoted at $45 each... by the time they added in all the fees the total was near $250... Quote
jerry455 Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 put on potenza g009, 245 50 hr 16, they are an all season. put them on over a year and a half ago. 460 treadwear temp A traction A. they handle very nice and are still good in the rain and snow. i think they are an older design, i think they might have been replaced with a new model.
