getrag 284 questions

As some of you may noticed in a couple of my threads, I'm putting a 284 in one of my TGPs. I got everything out of the donor car(axles, shifter, shifter cables, engine mounts, etc.). Anyways, my question is that on a 284 the extension shaft for the passenger axle looks different than the one used on the 282. It's also has provisions on it that are used for the alternator. I'm just wondering if this is going to cause any interference issues and whether or not it will bolt up correctly to my block or my subframe. Can I get the extension shaft from a w-body 282 and use that in place of the 284 extension??? I thought that our passenger side engine mount was directly beneath our pullies, whereas IIRC the 3.4 was on the back side of the engine underneath the alternator. It seems to me that the w-body 282 extension shaft would be the easier to do, but I could be wrong :?

can't help you, but i really want to know the details too. i just found a 284 to match my TGP engine going into my Cutlass. it's in a rolled Z34 w/109,000 miles and hopefully the salvage yard won't charge me an arm & a leg for it. otherwise i've already found a 282 for $300. i've already went thru two Getrag 282's now tho, and considering i wasn't even running alot of power thru them (stock 2.8 Corsica, and a stock 3.1 Cutlass), i think they are weak even tho people put V8's in front of them.....i sure as heck wouldn't trust a 282 behind a V8 or even a modded TGP motor.....but i would trust it more than a 4T60.....

The subframes are identicle aside from the DOHC having a second mounting pad on the passenger rear side, so it will not cause interference there. I am pretty sure that the x-shaft bolts to the block and not the rear motor mount and it is further towards the drivers side because of the alternator.

forget the 284 - i don't want to run into any unforseen problems. i'll get a price from the yard if any of the CO/WY members are interested this week sometime. it's from a Z34 (not sure on year) but the odometer read 109,xxx miles.....it was rolled so i'm assuming it still runs, but he said it's been there over a year.... the DOHC engine was there too and i can get a price on that too. he might just sell the whole car.

not to burst your bubble or anything... but the Z34's have the 284 tranny...

i know it's a 284, i just decided that i don't want to use a 284 and thought other local people might be interested in my Z34 find. i'm going to get another 282 instead and keep my fingers crossed.

i was just there this morning talking with the guy about the 284 in the Z34. i went and took a look at the car and it is totally fucked up. i rowed thru the gears and it felt fine, the clutch pedal hydraulics are disconnected or something cuz the pedal just falls to the floor with no effort. i couldn't seem to find the dipstick, but there was about a 1/2" hole in the case that looked like that was what it was for :? so i have no idea what the fluid looks like. the axle shafts were seperated and out of the trans, and it looked like some dirt/dust may have been able to blow inside :( i also didn't see the intermediate shaft. i told the guy i decided to get a Getrag 282 in Buffalo instead. he asked me how much they are charging for everything and i told him $300 (pedals, shifter, axles, everything). apparantly he doesn't own the car and needs to call the owner to get a price on the engine, trans, or even the whole car. it has just short of 109,000 miles on the odometer. the DOHC motor looked complete, just really dusty. he said the car's been sitting there for about a year. Tim - we should go check it out and see what you think. he told me i could pull it fwiw. i told him i'd be back in a few days so he can contact the owner in the meantime. oh yeah, he told me it ran when it came to his yard....most of the damage is in the rear/top (rolled bad). i'm in Gillette for most of this month but i'll probably be in Laramie once a week or two....

oh yeah, i went junkyarding in Douglas on my way up to Gillette yesterday, and finally got a rear drives side door window for $20. not much for W-bodies but surprisingly i found an '82 or '83 Buick Turbo Regal (the 4-barrel variety). it still had the most of the piping and the AirReserch turbo on it.....that turbo was SMALL!!!!!!! i think my T25 was bigger! it was an interesting find....

but yeah Tim if you're interested in that car it's at ACE salvgage right off of Ft. Buford Lane in Laramie (take the 1st right after the train bridge on your way to Ft.Collins just after the Holiday Inn). it's sort of by the Vet clinic on the south side of town. it doesn't really look like a salvage yard till you get closer...it's more of a metal recycling place. just tell the guy Joshua Mitchell told you about it.....(he has my name down and will know what car you're talking about).
