i saw an add in GM high tech performance magazine for a performance torque converter for the camaro v8. anybody seen anything like that for w-bodies at all? they were claiming 50-60 hp at the wheels. sound like BS on the figures but might be nice to have anyway

i saw a web site that had 3000 and 3500 stall converters for the 4t60 trannys they where $550

i will have to dig that web site up again

Wasn't it "ProTorque"? http://www.protorque.com/prodln/pl.htm

I seem to remember back in the day, someone on the 3.4 Club on Yahoo mentioned them, and a higher stall converter they'd made for the 4T60.

yeah you have a 4T60 also know as 440T4 anyone? 93 newer got 4T60E's?

but for the converter i would beef up the tranny (rebuild ect.) if i where to get a higher stall converter i would also get a tranny cooler also if you dont have a stock one (not sure if you do or not)

but it is you to money wise and ect. it can get pricey

let us know what you do and hoe it turns out

good luck

about that tranny cooler- how much do those cost? also, for anyone who can shed some light on this...

my tranny is 4spd + OD. is this out of the ordinary or not? it seemed odd to me for a 1990 lumina to have a 5 spd auto trans, because i've never seen that before. what do you guys think?

Yes all these trannies are 3spd plus OD. The 5 gears you are feeling can be explained like this:

1st

2nd

3rd

Torque Converter Lockup (not another gear)

4th

Hope that helps

Those hp gains are far from bs.... A good stall converter whether it is mild or wild will dramatically increase torque multiplication

You are totally right. This is from one of my earlier posts:

As for the new converter, I say that the one I got sucks, no matter what the guy at the shop says. I'm no transmission tech, but I thought that a bad converter would make the car feel sluggish of the line. Since I've had the new one put in, the car just doesn't have the same "snap" when you push down the pedal that it did with the original one. Before, it would peel tire from a stop at half pedal or more. Now, you have to just about floor it. Also before, on a slight incline, the car would stay in place while your foot went from the brake to the gas (in drive). Now, if you're not paying attention, it will drift back almost like a standard shift car. It scared me for a second the first time it did that. I noticed the change immediately when I drove the car home from the shop. I talked to the guy who did the work (also is part owner of the shop) and of course, he acted like he thought I was crazy. He road tested it and said that nothing was wrong with it.

Other than that slight annoyance, it works great.

so did you experience horsepower/torque gains or not?

by the way, if i put it in Drive instead of Overdrive, there are definitely 4 shifts. i'll post more on this later.

thanks

Wrong!! The last "shift" is the Torque Converter locking up.

easy now killer...

ok so what exactly is this mysterious locking of the torque converter to which you refer?

by the way i meant in drive there are 3 shifts, meaning for gears. ( or two and the great locking of the converter)

When a torque converter locks up, it reduces the loss incurred when it operates normally. Typically, the turbine side of the converter turns faster, as it is attached to the engine, than the pump side, which is attached to the tranny. When the converter locks up, both halves of the TC turn at the same speed. It is supposed to make an auto tranny more efficient.
