GOT2B GM Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 Looking to replace my dead 5 yr old Optima red top in the TGP. Would like to stick with a gel battery vs the acid kind. Any recommendations? Walmart here wants $200 for a 720 CCA redtop Maybe I'll hold out to buy one on the drive home from Seattle in a couple weeks. Quote
Addicted To Boost Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 I bought the one O'Reillys had that was the correct CCA for our cars and paid $30 with trade for the old battery. It came with a 2-year warranty and I just replace it every year, since the TGP eats a battery every winter. Quote

carkhz316 Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 Isn't there a limit to how many times you can replace it? I know the Wal-Mart ones do, because when I grabbed the one that was shot out of that '92 GP I have, when I took it there, they scanned it and said it was the third time it had been replaced under the warranty, despite my thought of the 3yr warranty recycling every time you got one. That wasn't the case apparently Quote
GOT2B GM Posted April 2, 2009 Author Report Posted April 2, 2009 the battery is 5 yrs old, well over the 3 yr free replacement warranty. Won't hold a charge after sitting this past winter. Quote
slick Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 When your in Seattle, pick up a Redtop from Autozone. I think I paid $170 US for mine, for the Firebird. Quote
GOT2B GM Posted April 2, 2009 Author Report Posted April 2, 2009 with exchange I might as well buy it for the $200 CDN Quote
slick Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 Exchange is that bad now? Have you tried shopping around online any? Quote
GOT2B GM Posted April 2, 2009 Author Report Posted April 2, 2009 exchange is not so great, around 80 cents American to the Canadian dollar on average. Quote
Andrew Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 i bought my Redtop a few years ago for $120 at my local 4wheelparts. They have it listed at $150 now. http://www.4wheelparts.com/RedTop.aspx?t_c=72&t_s=12&t_pt=4219&t_pl=4994&t_pn=OPT8022-091 Quote

1990lumina Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 Matt I paid roughly $120CDN at our Costco here in Saskatoon for my 720CCA RedTop in my TSX last fall. Quote
GOT2B GM Posted April 3, 2009 Author Report Posted April 3, 2009 Ended up buying one at Costco for $135. Had to renew our membership (it had expired last week ) but Costco Optima + membership renewal was still cheaper than the $200 Walmart Optima. Thanks for the input guys! Quote
CSI_MuNkY Posted April 3, 2009 Report Posted April 3, 2009 And now I will probably go and buy one too! Living here is a bad influence! lol Jamie Quote
slick Posted April 3, 2009 Report Posted April 3, 2009 Crap, had I remembered, I would have suggested a dry cell battery. The cool thing about them, you can lay them on their sides, and they weigh about 1/4 the weight of a lead-acid or gel cell battery. http://www.fadfusion.com/selection.php?product_item_number=20082402890 Quote

It doesn't show one. I wonder how they stand up to -40 and lower for 2 months straight. Defiantely interesting..just a bit hesitant with the longevity of it. Quote
Garrett Powered Posted April 3, 2009 Report Posted April 3, 2009 AGM batteries are the most heavy duty of them all. heavy though, and expensive because of all the lead. Quote
rockfangd Posted April 3, 2009 Report Posted April 3, 2009 by chance did you try trickle charging the battery? Quote
