cperna15
hello i just bought my got grand prix and i am new to this site. i got this car for a trade knowing it had some problems and i fixed them all exept the trans, it has no first gear and no overdrive. for me to start driving i have to manualy shift it into 1 or 2 or it will start me out in third but 1 amd 2 only put me in second gear and 3 and D put me in third gear. btw its a 3.1 1995 grand prix....please help me
GOT2B GM
Had my old 93 Z34 do something similar to this. It would only give me 2nd and 3rd gear. Turns out the VSS harness had a short in it, which caused the trans to go into "limp mode" because it didn't know how fast the car was going at any given time. CSI_MuNkY
Judging by the avatar its a 94-96 and the valence is in better shape then mine.... Maybe that's why my car doesn't run... Jamie

cperna15
typo, im not doing it today lol im do it on saturday. and how hard is it to do a 5 speed swap and is it worth it, also i have a whole turbo setup for it but i am unable to find headers, what do i do?? jtwmechanic
5-speed swap? i guess you plan to use a getrag 284 or something close. for a daily driver big deal, weekend toy not a big deal. either way it can be done depending on you level of persistance. it would be very easy with a whole donor car for clutch pedal assembly, lines, measurements ect... turbo will require the assistance of a really good exhaust shop. i guess you could chop up some $500 headers and make it work. the company that made the turbo should be able to give you the specs. oldscsc
I agree with Matt, sounds like it's in limp mode.

jtwmechanic
well if nothing from old trans was used then that eliminates that. is this a new trans? or salvage.
cperna15
salvage, and the car ran perfectly before it came out....
jtwmechanic
well so far its pointing toward a bad comp. those year cars shared engine and trans functions with the same comp. i am not a tranny expert but have had my own business building and repairing vehicles of all kinds for 10+ years. seems like all salvage yards think each and every car ran fine just before the parts get pulled. this description is the most common way these types of trannies go out. first then od then nothing. but could be a bad comp
cperna15
is the computer that you are talking the one in the front pass side between the headlights and coolent res?
Crazy K
DOES YOUR SPEEDOMETER WORK 100%? DOES IT SHIFT BETWEEN SECOND AND THIRD ON IT'S OWN? (or only if you manually place the car in 2 or 1 for SECOND, and D or OD for THIRD[which is drive])
cperna15
my speedo works 100% and it will not shift on its own
jtwmechanic
modulator valve failure will cause tranny not to shift on its own, but you said you used a different one so unless its bad too then back to a faulty comp or you just got another bad tranny. in my area you can get a 60 day warranty salvage tranny for $400 and a complete rebuild with 12 month 12,000 warranty for around $750-$900. wish you had a spare comp to swap to check it. Crazy K
and to be sure the six pin plug on the top front of the tranny is attached, correct? are you sure you have the right tranny? a tranny from a wrong model year might have different wiring pinouts for the plug... jtwmechanic
strange both trannies acting the same?
cperna15
well the trans in good so it cant be that, can it be a tps?
cperna15
well i was talking to a buddy of mine and he was telling me to replace the throtle position sensor, idle air control, and the ecu... now the computer sounds reasonable and maybe even the throtle position sensor, but the iac sounds rediclious to me. let me know what you guys think.....thank you
jtwmechanic
not so certain about the sensors, wish you had extra comp to swap and see
