ismellrealbad
yeah, um i need this replaced. i took my car in today thinking i had an oil leak to see how much its going to cost. no oil leak, its coolant (which explains my coolant loss). im not sure how i confused oil with coolant, i feel like a retard, but i guess with dex-cool running down the back of the engine it looks like oil. anyways they said it needs a lower manifold gasket and they want $550 to replace it. im kinda pissed cuz i baught this car so that it wouldnt need major repairs like this. anyways ive been considering a new motor in the back of my head lately, 3400 preferably but cant see dumping almost $1500 to buy it, ship it, and have someone put it in. i asked this before but i am just confirming, if i find a 3400 top end, just lower and upper manifolds, they will fit on and work fine? i cant see spending that kinda money on this so i want to be able to gain from it
Guest Anonymous
Too bad you didn't live closer. I'd do the gasket for $50 plus parts.

ismellrealbad
id actually rather come to you cuz then at least i can learn a little bit. we'd need to find time when we're both off from work. this wouldnt take more than a day right? ill pm you about it soon like no more than a week ahead. my dad insists on taking it for a second opinion, although this first dignosis makes perfect sense and sounds reasonable
Robby1870
I dont think a second opinion is necessary, it definitely sounds like a lower intake gasket, and those things like to go on 3100s. But, the 3400 top end, heads and up, should be a direct bolt on Robby
Aaron
it is a direct bolt on and i have a set of 2 3400 cylinder heads, perfect condition, with only 8k miles if your interested.

ismellrealbad
OK so heres an update on this. my dad decided maybe its just coming from the coolant temp sensor instead of that gasket. so we baught a new one and went to replace it when we realised the socket wasnt going to reach it cuz the TB was in the way. We took the TB off and holy shit the back of it was all gunked up and the front had caked on dirt. we used brake cleaner to get the gunk off, which worked good and i cleaned it out. i took my intake apart and cleaned all the shit. we switched out the cts and put the tb back on. i took it for a spin and the first thing that happend was i lit up my front right tire. my car hasnt been able to peel out like that (or at all) on dry pavement since i got that stupid intake. there was also some gunk shit traveling up into the plenum. my question is, is there any kinda better air filter i can get or something i can do to keep dirt OUT of my engine?? otherwise as much as i like this thing im gunna have to take it off if its not going to do jack shit about keeping dirt out. as for the leak the sensor didnt fix it. were gunna take it to get looked at again somewhere else. so redturby i might still be up for ur offer

ismellrealbad
maybe a quality brand name K&N cone will help??? (sarcasm, but still a serious question)
Brian P
Get one that uses oil for the filtration (K&N) also make sure the pipe is sealing correctly at the TB. Or just put the normal airbox back in

ismellrealbad
another update..the gasket was replaced and the leak has stopped (or so they say. i get it back tomorrow). sorry turby. i did wanna have you do it but my dad woulnt be too happy if i were to tell him im taking it to someone ive never seen before who lives 5 hours away. honestly i dont give a shit what he sez. if i still wanted you to do it that badly i would have told him to fuck himself and i would have came to you. but id rather keep everyone happy and just do what he wanted. anyways before my dad took it in, like i said before, we replaced the CTS. just before that, if not that day, the car was running insanely hot at idle. when the new cts didnt fix the leak, i just assumed the hi temps were from the intake gasket problem worsening. they fixed it today and told me the leak is gone, but its still running hot. i dont understand what can be causing this. it was running just fine even with the leak not even a week ago. i wanna take a guess and say the thormostat is fucking up. im going to ask my dad and if he thinks its that were gunna try to replace it ourselves. if that doesnt fix it im selling the fucking car and im gunna buy my friends 91 TA. im out of a job so ill profit $1500 from this and thats enough cash to keep me going till i find a good job. also the fan works, but kicks in at 227.....it used to kick in a lot sooner than that. any input would be a big help. thanks
Robby1870
Try replacing the T-stat, and do a coolant flush. Also, you may want to consider manual fan controls Robby
