Masterchief362
I had my tranny fully flushed at 110k miles. Was perfect, until one day this winter it reached -20 degrees and that day the 1st-2nd shift became jerky or hesitant from 2-3k rmp, but any other rpm it shift smooth as normal. It had 126k when this started. Even now it still does this, especially when cold. Once warm, or warm outside in general, it will rarely do it. No other gears do this, and going into gear is also smooth. Fluid is clean and perfect color, and level is right on the line according to the dipstick. Also, tranny makes no weird noises. (unlike my lumina which made a nasty noise at idle before the tranny went.) I would also like to point out that it started after my dad and i tore down the top part of the motor to do the oil pump drive seal. Possible engine problem, not tranny? I could use some advice. We did the seal only a few days before we had the uber cold day.
carkhz316
When it get's to that ~20 below or less range, on a cold start, even after having warmed up for awhile, my Euro with 199,000 on it will wind out a bit, under minimal throttle input. It will then firmly shift into second, almost bang sometimes. Sooooooo, don't know if this is the same, but the extreme cold does wierd things, as does extreme heat. Masterchief362
yeah I am hoping that it is just the cold and the old age of the car not mixing. I do not beat on this car, I learned that from the lumina. I let it warm up EVERY day for at least 2 minutes before driving off, 5-10 when it is below 25 or so. Even a minute in summer when it is like 100 degrees outside. This is the cars last winter however, next winter i am going to be driving a small pickup/ suv or honda civic beater... the cutlass is going to be stored, and redone as I am going to school for auto body starting next fall. I didn't like the car at first, now I am beginning to adore it (especially after all the money I put into it ). Yeah its slow, but I like the look of the sedan. And I don't wanna subject it to anymore wisconsin winters.
cubsfan24
My Lumina shifts a little rough going from 1st-2nd at certain RPMs (prob around 2k-3k like you are saying) when the car is warm. This has gotten a little better since I changed the filter/fluid last fall. You can feel it shift a tad harder than it should going from 1st-2nd sometimes. Mine has been doing this since I bought the car 15,000 miles ago. From what I have read this is fairly normal for these transmissions and shouldn't be anything to worry too much about. GP1138
My '95 GP sedan did this for half the time I had it. I don't know what it's status is right now but it shifted fine otherwise.

Masterchief362
it made a change in topic because auto body is awesome that Z looks great in the first pics. I hope I can get the cutty looking that good someday.
Masterchief362
Shoulda worried.... tranny is almost dead. Today coming back from Milwaukee she tried shifting to second and just grinded... still moves and intact but the tranny is done... time to get replaced or rebuilt... sucks. Another W-Body tranny fail for Matt. 4t60-e ftmfl. Good news, when she is done, everything will be a year old or newer... only thing left to do now is tie rods. jtwmechanic
i highly reccomend installing a fluid cooler with your new tranny, and if it's in your budget have a shift kit installed or just put one in your self it's not that hard
