I have a 96 Grand Prix GTP with the 3.4 and the 4t60e trans. I bought this car about a year ago and had the transmission flushed and the shop used alcohol to flush it, about a week later it started slipping a little so I checked the fluid and they had left the alcohol in it. I dumped that and changed the filter and put atf back in it but it still slipped then I changed the first reverse servo I belive it was and it still slipped, so I parked it and has been sitting since atleast november. Yesterday I went out and started it and and drove it up the road by the house and stopped at a drive to turn it around, when I put it in reverse it started slipping and my temper got the better of me causing me to just floor it and bounce it off the rev limiter once then it caught, it about threw me thu the windshield. I backed the rest of the way out in the road and put it in drive and it took off just fine. I drove it down the road a little ways then my curiosity got the better of me so I stopped and took off hard, It broke the tires loose did a little burn out and went screaming down the road. Now when it sits and cools off it will slip the transmission until it gets just over 3500 rpm then it will bang into gear and take off and its fine until I shut the car off and let it sit. Anybody ever had this happen or have any suggestions on what could be causing it to do this? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Brian

i've never heard of a shop flushing a transmission with alcohol. it's usually done with more tranny fluid. correct me if i am wrong.

im guessing putting some liquid other than tranny fluid in a tranny might destroy it just a little bit. it's probly gonna have to be rebuilt.

I always herd it's never a good idea to have your transmission flushed. Some of the places that change oil and other things will offer to flush out the transmission. My understanding is they push new ATF through the transmission thereby pushing out the old and doing this until it comes out clean. The problem with that is you dislodge debris that has been sitting in there and now its free to get hung it places it doesnt need to. I always felt it was just better to drop the pan, let the fluid drain out and then put the pan back on and replace with new ATF. I have always done it this way and even with new fluid and filter I havent had any issues. I do baby the car however, I don't really WOT.

If it fails after a flush, it was soon to fail anyways!

that is supposed to be true... but why risk it?

that's what i've heard. especially if the tranny has never been flushed and it has high mileage.

In my 94 I had my trans flushed at 124k, it assploded 2 weeks later at 126k. The only sign it showed was at moderate throttle it shifted so hard into 2nd that it actually spun the tires one or twice in that 2 weeks, 2nd gear scratch from an automatic :willynilly: I was turning into my friends driveway cut it too wide, and with my foot on the brake I moved it from drive to R and the reverse sungear or whatever exploded, you could hear chenks floating around, it was great  This was when I was driving 70 miles one way to college (hence over 2k in 2 weeks) I also owed $2k on the car still :willynilly:
