AWeb80
When I Get To Making My Powerlogs next week, do i need to put a bung in for the egr? or can i leave it off? will it set off a ses light if it has no gases going through it? 19Cutlass94
if you dont have an EGR delete in the computer then yes it will throw an SES light.
Pontiac6KSTEAWD
That doesnt make sense to me.. If he leaves the EGR system in, and plugs the tube, the computer will think the EGR is there, and working. The computer doesnt measure the amount of gases going thru the EGR, it just measures the amount of open or close on the valve. I dont see any ill affect of leaving the system in if the system is plugged.
95 vert
Remember the 3100's with the blocked EGR intake passage causing a check engine light? The EGR opens and the PCM looks for a change from the 02 sensor so it "knows" the EGR is working correctly.
Pontiac6KSTEAWD
Was it OBD1 or OBD2? If its OBD2, than maybe I could understand that, but not on OBD1.. I dont remember what year your car was AWEB thou..
19Cutlass94
his is a 94 or 95. same yr as mine and when the passage is blocked, the PCM does look at the EGR and will give an SES light.

GP1138
Just plugging the sensor in and blocking/removing the tube will not preclude the SES light from coming on. Found this out when I did my 3400 intake swap.
BXX
It is needed to keep the light from coming on. Furthermoar, you run a high risk of burning valves without it UNLESS you run a slightly richer fuel mixture.

To add/ elaborate on this, as per the error code description, (at least on OBDI cars), under closed throttle decel, the EGR will activate and the ECM will watch for a RPM drop. If it's not detected it will set the EGR code (one of them 30something ones, can't remember)

5speedz34
How does not running a EGR cause a high risk of burning valves? So you guys are saying leave it bolted to the engine and plugged in but with no tube?

xtremerevolution
An obd1 car will throw an SES code if the egr isn't working properly, trust me.
BXX
How does not running a EGR cause a high risk of burning valves? So you guys are saying leave it bolted to the engine and plugged in but with no tube? Higher combustion temps is the main issue. The inert gas through the EGR has a cooling effect. 5speedz34
Well either way I know you can shut it off via PCM tune.
BXX
Well either way I know you can shut it off via PCM tune. Yeah. I did on my CS with HPT. I have a blockoff kit from WOT-tech as well. I enrichened the AFR a bit too to keep combustion temps down. Im not a fan of KR Hell, half clogged cat, a decent mild tune and no EGR and my car passed E-check. They had to do a exhaust gas test on the dyno. Passed barely, but it passed.. The guy saw the results, the sticker on my car and said he knew right away I had no EGR
5speedz34
I thought Ohio got rid of emissions testing?
BXX
I thought Ohio got rid of emissions testing? Not yet they were supposed to but its been prolonged. Its supposed to be up for review again sometime this year I think. But in the end, they wont get rid of it..
5speedz34
Fucking stupid. Although I should support vehicle emissions, I don't simply because I feel people should be free to do whatever the hell they want to their cars. Unless I can see some serious proof that it helps (or saves) the environment I won't care for it.
