dirt_igirt
do you need the hud specific winshield to run a hud or can i use the windshield that came on my car.. i have a hud out of another car..
mfewtrail
A lot of people here swap in HUD's without the "specific" windshield. AFAIK, the hud specific window is supposed to add more clarity and cut down on glare. The people that have compared both can answer that for sure. Pontiac6KSTEAWD
And on first gens, the HUD windshield I dont think is available anymore..
CSI_MuNkY
The only differnece between the non-hud and hud windsheilds is clarity. I was told by a glass shop that all the glas was inspected and graded, the ones with better grades got a sticker slapped on them and were used in an hud equipt car. FWIW, I have read about huds getting swapped into othe cars that never came with them without a problem.
95 vert
Non hud windshield the display is a little fuzzy. Not really enough to matter in my opinion
rockfangd
my car was not equipped with hud but it is so clear that the car behind me can see how fast i am going

I was told by a glass shop that all the glas was inspected and graded, the ones with better grades got a sticker slapped on them and were used in an hud equipt car. That would be incorrect. That have a film on them. I cant remember if its a polarization of film, or?? But there is a complete difference in between the 2.
CSI_MuNkY
I'm just going by what the glass shop told me Either way though, HUD does work without the specified glass... If I ever need a new windshield you can bet your ass I'm not paying the money they want for the HUD specific glass. Jamie
Pontiac6KSTEAWD
A HUD windshield in my AZTEK is only like 70 bucks more. On the Azteks, and Rendezvous, its a polarized glass, and makes a world of difference driving..

Pontiac6KSTEAWD
My TGP, when I bought it, still had the factory glass. It had a film on it, and a PPG HUD decal in the center of the glass. The replacement, did not have a film on it, and did not have the PPG HUD decal. There was a diference inbetween the old glass and the new glass.. On my AZTEK club, they are saying that the HUD windshield is 2000 dollars, and the non-hud glass is like 300 dollars. 2000?? HOLY SHIT! will have to keep the Full Coverage insurance on my Aztek.. digitaloutsider
I still don't buy Ken's theory of the clarity making the windshield. They are different glass, I don't care what anyone says, and until I see hardcore proof otherwise I'm sticking to it. The HUD windshield in my Grand Prix creates a much different image than the non-HUD windshield in my Cutlass. The Cutlass numbers are much larger and asstastic looking, while the TGP's numbers and small and crisp.
supreme_style21
If you're paying for the glass, the factory non-hud windshield looks great. If your insurance company is paying for it, it looks much better. It sure as hell isn't worth the extra bucks if it's coming out of your pocket. digitaloutsider
If anything, the 91+ is a much better design when it comes to clarity and size, which is clearly not the case when it comes to what I'm seeing. The glass is different.
digitaloutsider
http://www2.dupont.com/Automotive/en_US/applications/caseStudies/case042.html This DuPont article states that they use two different forms of the laminate in HUD windshields. Crazy K
Shawn, I agree, and i disagree. I don't think the earlier windows were made in a special way, but they are now. can you post pics of what you describe? can you also post a pic of the "printed" glass label on each the window? is this the OEM glass in the tgp? slick
OEM glass is in the TGP.
GOT2B GM
I dunno, I put HUD in a non equipped 93 Z34 and a 93 CS vert and it looks good enough to me. Not bad enough to justify triple the money on HUD windshield.
Venom
Yeah my CS has HUD from a Grand Prix and I can see the images just fine while driving. The only time its difficult to see is in direct sunlight, but I would expect that.

5speedz34
I'm pretty sure my glass is oem or pretty damn old. The film at the top is fading to yellow from blue. When I get put of class I'm going to check for a HUD moniker. In direct sunlight I can't see shit. I will say though since I cleaned the HUD unit its way clearer. Yesterday it got so bright in the evening I could see a reflection of the mirror within the HUD unit itself.
gpchris
My SE came with HUD but my GTP didnt. Both of them now have HUD and I never noticed any differences.
grandprixnyc
The HUD in my car is original and for a while I had the original HUD windshield (with the little sticker). Well, it cracked, and I had it replaced. I told them it was a HUD car, and i don't know if what they put in was a HUD windshield, but it looks the same. I added a HUD to my '95 GP, so it didn't have the HUD windshield. And honestly, it displayed fine. I didn't notice any problems.
5speedz34
I know Ken had another thread a few months back. I checked my window today, no HUD markings. Where would it be? Here is how it looks. The first one was in a parking structure headlights where on. Second is on the street headlights off. No change in the dimming of the image. I don't know why my phone resized these but I know they are small.
