Dave_Hash
I have a 95 Chevy Monte Carlo LS with the 3100 engine, I believe correct me if I am wrong. I am having a problem with the car coming out of gear and the speedometer dropping to zero. This occurs more often during wet weather, like rain or what I am experiencing now with snow melting. While maintaining speed or just when I let off of the gas after accelerating to my desire speed, I feel the car go out of gear and the speedometer drop to zero. If I press on the gas I just hear the engine rev up but the car does not accelerate any as if it was in neutral. The only way to get it back into a gear is to press the brake at a good amount of pressure, turn off the car then turn it back on while coasting in neutral or to rev the sh!t out of the engine until it kicks itself back in. If you just let it coast 10% of the time it will put itself back into a gear while coasting. No matter what way it gets back into gear with the exception of turning off the car then turning it back on while coasting in neutral the car 80% of the time be stuck in a gear other then first or sometimes even second. This means to get the car moving again if I do not have the time to turn off the car then turn it back on, I will have to rev the engine to 3,000 rpm wait and I slowly start to move. Once the car gets stuck in a gear it will no longer shift up or down. The only way all of this gets reset back to normally operation with drivability of shifting and starting in first gear is to turn off the car then turn it back on while coasting in neutral or turn off the car then turn it back on while in park. I have replaced the speed sensor and it has had no effect on the problem.
Brian P
If the speed sensor wiring is good, it is likely a failure of the PCM. You could try a used one from an identical car (same model (Or Lumina), same engine) see if that solves it.
RobertISaar
you know i had something strange like this happen to me a few times before.... raining outside, night, deer jumps out in front of me, so slam the brakes to the floor, deer moves, i'm still going 30-35 after it moves so i didn't see the point in slowing down any further, so foot to gas pedal and i notice its kind of sluggish and when i get to 55 the RPMs are noticably higher, so i figured it was in third gear with the TCC locked, throw the shifter into neutral, wait a second or two then throw it back into 4th... that didn't do it, still in third. stopped on the side of the road, shut it off, restarted, worked fine... about a year ago now, hasn't done it since.
