Spilly Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 Ok I have quite a few suspension issues with my car right now, one thanks to a pot hole. First of all, my driver side rear is making a loud banging noise and the car slams up and down, but the strut and spring look fine. It almost feels like the car is bottoming out, but it isn't. The hell could it be? Aaand, after I nailed a pothole good and destroyed one of my wheels, the right front (where I hit the pothole) make a squeaking sound over bumps and such, it rides fine though, and everything looks good. My alignment is gone too. Quote
slick Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 #1: Most commonly a strut mount if it is a clanking noise. If it is a loud banging, I'd be pulling it apart and inspecting asap, could be something more severe. #2: Could be a plethora of things. Hopefully you didn't bend up much stuff. Quote
Spilly Posted February 24, 2009 Author Report Posted February 24, 2009 My issue is I don't have much in the way of a jack/stands or an indoor place to tear it apart. Balls. Quote
kwk39018 Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 Your upper strut mount is bad.Go i the trunk, peel back the carpet over the struts and you should see the strut coming thought the top.The load banging you haer is the strut hiding the rear deck.Replace struts and upper mounts. Quote
Spilly Posted February 26, 2009 Author Report Posted February 26, 2009 I just realized my car doesn't have rear springs. Holy shit. That makes replacing the struts SO much easier. Quote

White93z34 Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 provided the lower strut bolts are not siezed inside the knuckle then, yes it is far easier. Quote
kwk39018 Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 Yep MicPheson All the way.Did All 4 corners and will never do it again.Never heard of having 100 special tools just to do struts. Sorry about the spelling Quote
White93z34 Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 only tools I have ever used to do gen1 rear struts was a BFH and standard hand tools. to properly remove and install a leafspring requires proper tools, but there are other ways around that. not sure what special tools you speak of Quote
kwk39018 Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 Well glad you like it but i don't.I did use a BFH Should have had to. Quote
Spilly Posted February 27, 2009 Author Report Posted February 27, 2009 My car has no rust on it at all, this it's first year in the salt since new, I got a Colorado car. I've done struts on an Intrigue, wasn't that bad....just needed alot of penetrating oil. The weird thing about my car, is it only makes that banging noise, and bounce, when it's really cold out. I drove it yesterday and it rode fine and it was like nothing ever happened, we had a decent warm up. Quote
White93z34 Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 Might just be the rear struts themselves. the z34 I just bought has horrible rear struts, they knock like no other over about any bump! Quote
rockfangd Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 I thought mine would be easy and they were not at all easy, not when the bolts that secure the mounts snap off, and the auxillary springs threaded holes wont work with the bolt supplied. I have gone through it twice on my car. The noise in the rear can also be coming from either a broken trailing arm or a bad trailing arm support under the rear door Quote
