karrkrazzie
I am pretty to w-body's although i have experience through my bro. I just got a 99 lumina LTZ with a Series II 3800 and I am just curious what some easy power add-ons for this car are... I thought I found a post the other day with some good ideas but I cannot seem to find it again. If i missed it and someone could just tell me where it is then I will do it that way... Otherwise any ideas are great, just looking for some ways to add a little more power.

9lumina6
depends on what level you wana go. theres endless 3800 mods...but there are some limits to modding a 3800 in a 1.5 Gen vs modding a 2nd gen w/ a 3800. If you plan on staying NA....go w/ an HV3..some 1.84 rockers, a DHP 1.0...and a FWI. If you plan on going s/c'd....you can get all the parts for a top swap.... or you can get the SS-M90 kit from ZZP. You'll need a 3'' DP if yer gunna go S/C'd.... and the only place that makes a 3'' DP for a 1.5 gen is Milzy Motorsports. Otherwise.. if you want to do headers...you will have to cut part of the firewall and welt a new piece in... cause the firewall is a tad different then in the 2nd gen's. and all headers are designed for 2nd gens. axisofjustice9c3
What are the limitations of modding a 1.5G?
9lumina6
What are the limitations of modding a 1.5G? Well.. i shouldnt really say "limitations" i should say "more obsticles" like for instance like i said.... if you want to do headers....you gotta cut the firewall...cause there are no headers designed for a 1.5 gen. You will have to custom make a catback....but thats not hard. With determination....you can make them quick.
axisofjustice9c3
Do the standard grand prix downpipes like WBS stocks fit 1.5G cars?
9lumina6
Do the standard grand prix downpipes like WBS stocks fit 1.5G cars? No....WBS and ZZP DP's only work on 2nd gen 3800 cars. Milzy Motorsports is the only place you can get a 1.5 Gen 3800 DP (to my knowledge)
axisofjustice9c3
Wow, it's twice the price plus more for a 1.5G downpipe! It looks like the same darn part, it's wierd...

It's different cause the 1.5g's have a different firewall setup. You could use a WBS or ZZP 3'' dp on a 1.5g but you would have to cut the firewall out and re-weld it so its more gradual...but if yer gunna do that u mite as well do headers. axisofjustice9c3
What about just smacking the firewall with a bfh in order to recess the area a bit?
9lumina6
What about just smacking the firewall with a bfh in order to recess the area a bit? idk.... thhere are 2 layers of metal to cut thru wich are a good 2'' apart....I've helped some1 i know back in NY cut out his firewall on his top swapped Z-34 so that he could put headers on it....believe me it was not a fun or pretty job. The headers still barely touched the newly welded in piece, so i dont think pounding 2 layers in would work.....you'd have to cut and re-weld. Even if you could pound it.....there was no room to do it....even with the cradle lowered.
axisofjustice9c3
Do you still like to do stuff like that? Wanna make some extra money? I'd pay someone to do this stuff with me and provide guidance on some of this stuff. I am not expierienced in FWD. I am not even confident in swapping in new CV Halfshafts, so I have held off doing it yet. My whole dash is out as of now though! Finally got it out today after I was sure I had my new parts ready. Now I gotta find the console, seats, carpet, various other trim crap.

Now I gotta find the console, seats, carpet, various other trim crap. To an extent........ i meen i have done a set of CV shafts in my GTP b4 last summer by myself in my garage. Would I ever do them again......probably not.....after doing it the 1st time...(even doing them right, w/o breaking anything at all)....i still would rather pay to have them done. I dont mind doing little mods here and there on my own.....I've done 3 sets of headers (2 different sets on my own GTP).....full exhaust on my GTP, did that all on my own......and the Gen V swap i did 100% alone. Basically every single mod ive done to this car....i did entirely by myself. I wont get into the more complicated shit tho....like droping a tranny....or pulling a motor....dropping the cradle....even dropping a gas tank.... and 1 thing i ABSOLUTEY will not do is any kind of wiring. I have a fan switch in my GTP....i drilled a hole in hte plastic plate that my heated seat switch is in and put the switch in itself and ran the ground to a bolt under the center console... but i refuse to wire it in...cause i wont touch electronics.....so its sitting there useless rite now....and i have an electric oil pressure gauge for my a-pillar pod....but its got way too many wires to connect...and i refuse to do it. axisofjustice9c3
I'm good with electricals. I can probably work out those things you mentioned with you. Definitely at least the fan switch. I've dropped a few gas tanks, are they super hard on W's or something? I am not asking you if you wanna do labor for money. I am asking if you would ever be interested in making some extra cash by drinking a few beers (or other beverage) while making sure I'm doing shit right and maybe lending a hand on stuff thats easier for two people, I have mechanical skills and tools and all that. I like modding, but these cars are out of my range of knowledge (RWD...), I hate going at new stuff alone, and I don't trust mechanic shops for advice or labor, I am not convinced I have found one that won't overcharge me for things I don't need done. I ask all this because you are pretty much the only person local who I can think of who even has a remote interest in this stuff, even out of my already existing local friends. Anybody I know only wants to have me work on their car so they don't have to pay to have it done if something breaks, and it usually is dumped on me while they screw around. I'm researching this as well so I may as well ask; Did you ever do the HD swap with anyone, or change a FDR?

I've never done an HD swap...ive never really dont anything tranny wise xcept put a shift kit in my GTP. If you ever wanted to do a DP and/or a Powerlog.... i know how to do that stuff. I'm srry whats an FDR? i prolly know but im having a brain fart and cant think of it at the moment. If you plan on stayen NA....it probably wouldnt be a bad idea to get an HV3 wich you an get from ZZP. Those arnt hard at all to install...just pop the upper intake manifold off and place it in there. axisofjustice9c3
Gonna go zzp turbo in the next year or so when I get it mechanically perfect, painted, and interior swapped. Stainless powerlogs will come soon after exhaust. FDR=Front Drive Ratio. I wanna go 3.69:1 with a 7/8'' single drive chain when I install/have installed my HD swap. Ohh.. nahh ive never done an HD swap or gear changes b4. Turbo would be fun to have. I'd like to turbo mine eventually. You'd def. have to modify yer firewall to run any turbo kit in that. Because they all run on TOG stly DP's....wich are set up for 2nd gens.
axisofjustice9c3
I just got into my research into that, you are right, I am not going to be able to run with my 1.5g exhuast. I have looked elsewhere and the INTENSE/STS kit runs on a rear mounted turbo with any exhaust, I figure on the other kits, I can have a custom pipe fabbed to hook up to my exhaust that I will run. I don't have welding expierience, and I don't know anyone who could do it. I also found out I can run an HV3 with a turbo kit.

I dont have very much welding experience either.....i meen ive done it b4....but im not confident enough to completely make an exhaust for some1 and be 100% sure its not gunna fall apart on them lol.
