Addicted To Boost
I've never filled it I've always heard its overkill. The car is without oil pressure for what 10 seconds?! I mean its decent maintenance but most cars you can't fill the filter and get it on with the way it sits. That is enough time to wreak HELL on your crankshaft plain bearings. Metal to metal contact is BAD!

Regal_GS_1989
I usually don't fill the filter when I change my oil, and the car has never been without pressure for 10 seconds. Maybe 2 - 3 at the most. I figure that me starting it without oil in the filter isn't any worse than starting the car at -40, and that happens enough in the winter around here, so i don't tend to worry about it. jerry455
in the cold the oil that is in the filter starts to move when it is cranking, when the filter is dry there is no oil moving from the filter. i was always told that was the hardest time for the engine when it was starting, when most of the wear is happening so if the oil is there it might cause less wear. i don't know but i was always taught to fill the filter ,even with some oil, by my grand father . he taught auto mechanics for 35 years and i always worked with him. Regal_GS_1989
Yes. I have been told that as well, and believe it to be true. The reason i brought up starting the car in the cold is that when it is infact -40 (and we had a good 2 weeks of that this year) the oil is extremely thick. Yes, it might start flowing when you crank it over, but due to the consistency of the oil at that temperature, there is no way that it is able to flow fast enough to provide good lubrication until the engine has been running for a bit. 5speedz34
I really disagree modern engines don't have this type of issues. Go to any oil change place they won't fill the filter unless it's a turbocharged engine. I ran a Saturn (what ever the hell is the small one) for over 3 minutes without oil. It ticked like hell but it never seized up and the owner never came back with a blown motor. What about cars with a canister filter, obviously the manufacture thought about it. CSI_MuNkY
Whats the point in not doing it? it takes 30 second to fill up the filter before you put it on and its not going to do any damage by doing it. If it goes either way, not doing it causes more damage than doing it. 70% of all engine wear occurs on start up... my guess is that number climbs when you don't have oil running through the engine.... I ran a Saturn (what ever the hell is the small one) for over 3 minutes without oil. It ticked like hell but it never seized up and the owner never came back with a blown motor. I don't care if it never came back with an issue... that was just plain stupid... just because it never came back, doesn't make it right. If I found out someone did that to my car I would kick their ass. Jamie
