carkhz316 Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 (edited) Alright guys, I know everyone and there grandma wants to OMGL67BBQ!!!! swap their (insert "W-body" here), but I've really been doing my homework and reading up alot. I know for a fact that I could handle swapping one into my Monte, no question about it. I have the space, occasionally time (weekends off from work, woot!), and I have plenty of tools, (nearly $5K worth accumulated during my last 3.5 years of college). I have been searching high and low for wrecked GTP's, to no avail. (at least ones within my price range.) I often see engine/ trans combos, but I would optimally want the whole car so I know for a fact that everything is there that I need, not to mention to be rest assured that the thing works prior to it being ripped out of the donor car. Lately I have been coming to terms with just outsourcing the engine/ trans by itself, but would really like the car, even if Bigfoot ate it up to the firewall, just so the front is intact. You may be wondering why I don't just stick with my 150K mile L36 thats already in there and runs like a top? Well, there is no reason to rip it out other than the above stated, simply for the fact that I WANT TO (for obvious reasons), and I CAN!!! I don't plan on modding it much, if at all, nor do I want to get a already molested one. I don't give a rats ass about the 1/4, nor do I ever race my cars, just want the upgrade because can/ want. (Is that too selfish/ dickhead sounding???) Anyone have any suggestions, or donor vehicles with a good powertrain????? I don't know what my budget is, for right now just right car for right price I guess. Anyone can chime in. Just don't call me stupid. I'm not. I'm capable. Edited April 15, 2010 by carkhz316 Quote
White93z34 Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 If you already have a L36. I would just get a top end from a L67 and supercharge that. the extra compression helps out too. keep either the stock 3.8 pulley or move up to a 4.0 pulley. some fairly minor wiring changes and a PCM. there is even a vendor out there (don't remember who) that makes a lower intake that will bolt right to the L36 heads. Top end swap would be the easiest. Also, GTP's arent the old L67 cars. For an example, my Buick Regal GS has the L67 as well. Quote
03_lssport Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 I just had the L67 done in my Impala..and love it....If you're looking for a complete drop out check the guys at Morad's Parts....They have everything you need and they do installs as well! Quote
jeremy Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 I'd either top swap the l36 or turbo it.... Quote
carkhz316 Posted February 10, 2009 Author Report Posted February 10, 2009 You know, I've thought about the top-swap, but I've heard/ read conflicting views on cam, compression, internals, etc. differences, making slapping a blower on there debatable. I also want the 4T65-E HD to go along with it, so that's been my reason for the focus on getting the powertrain. 03_lssport: did you swap the whole engine/ trans, or just get a top-swap kit??? Anyway, I may consider top-swapping, but I just want to start from scratch, so to speak, and find something with some less miles. I'm not trying to sound bull-headed, but I think i just want to swap the whole shebang, since I know I could have 'em in and out in a day or two. Just gotta find a wrecked GTP, Regal GS?????......................................... Quote
White93z34 Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 what year car do you have? if you already have the 4t65 you are a diff swap away from having most of the HD parts honestly I'd almost rather have a S/C'd L36 IMO it is a better platform to build off of. higher compression and a different cam profile. As someone who has done this I would wholeheartedly recommend it Quote
carkhz316 Posted February 11, 2009 Author Report Posted February 11, 2009 '98 Monte Z34. Hmmm, if you say you've done it without a hitch, I may just consider it. I just have been being particular about the whole engine swap deal. I don't know, I gotta shop around.......... Quote

AL Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 Back on topic... I also say to topswap the L36... Quote
tim_haha2000 Posted February 14, 2009 Report Posted February 14, 2009 drop a l32 in. was easier than a topswap for me plus you get the whole motor all you have to change is the fuel rails and injectors and a few sensors. harness and pcm .i left my stock tranny in from my l36 runs great heck the hardest part was putting the harness back in Quote
Euro Posted February 14, 2009 Report Posted February 14, 2009 .i left my stock tranny in from my l36 runs great Don't expect the trans to last if you do any mods Quote
White93z34 Posted February 14, 2009 Report Posted February 14, 2009 the trans should more or less be fine, but a wise move would be to swap to the HD differential. once you have them side by side the difference is amazing Quote
Andrew Posted February 14, 2009 Report Posted February 14, 2009 along with the passenger side axle fixed Quote
tim_haha2000 Posted February 15, 2009 Report Posted February 15, 2009 its been 8 k no problems(90k on tranny) i dont baby it either but i dont sit thier doing burn outs or netural bombs either.but iam gonna throw a shift kit in till she blows then ill get a tranny from zz or intense Quote
White93z34 Posted February 15, 2009 Report Posted February 15, 2009 along with the HD axles thats kinda a requirement with the dif upgrade Quote

digitaloutsider Posted February 16, 2009 Report Posted February 16, 2009 You automatically need the HD axles if you're doing the HD differential. Quote
