AL Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 I am only at 84k miles but I wanna start picking up parts for my 100k maintenance... So far my list includes: Struts/Mounts Brake fluid flush Coolant flush Trans fluid/Filter Lower intake gaskets Upper intake gaskets Spark Plugs/Wires PCV valve Fuel Filter Any others I should add? Whats known for failing/needing replaced? Quote
Andrew Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 replace the upper intake itself with the improved one. this is the biggie for the L36. inspect brakes. install a cabin air filter since the GP's didnt come with one. just ask for one for a regal. the provisions are there, just no air filter. it goes under the cowl. when doing this make sure the weatherstripping that blocks water from entering the cabin air box is attached well. clean the EGR. clean the MAF with MAF ONLY cleaner. clean the throttle body. replace serpentine belt. Better one as in the L26 one? inspect brakes. install a cabin air filter since the GP's didnt come with one. just ask for one for a regal. the provisions are there, just no air filter. it goes under the cowl. when doing this make sure the weatherstripping that blocks water from entering the cabin air box is attached well. I dont think I have heard of that before... Where exactly is that filter box at? clean the EGR. clean the MAF with MAF ONLY cleaner. clean the throttle body. replace serpentine belt. My replies are in bold Quote

My replies are in bold The L26 one will not work, I don't think. Since it uses the drive-by-wire TB, I'm pretty sure the L36 TB won't bolt up. They have an improved/reinforced L36 upper intake that won't warp like the factory ones will. ZZP sells it, and other places do too. My mechanic got one for me a while back. To do the cabin air filter/weatherstripping under the cowl, this is a great help!! http://www.clubgp.com/newforum/tm.asp?m=2398123&p=1&tmode=1&smode=1 Quote
slick Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 No, it's a better designed, for the L36's. IIRC, it puts a metal pipe inside the EGR passage. Quote
AL Posted February 10, 2009 Author Report Posted February 10, 2009 Wow, I didnt even think of Seafoam... I think I am going to add HUD and a DIC to it also... Quote
AL Posted February 10, 2009 Author Report Posted February 10, 2009 Heres my final list I think Struts/Mounts Brake fluid flush Coolant flush Trans fluid/Filter Lower intake gaskets Upper intake gaskets Add improved upper intake Spark Plugs/Wires PCV valve Fuel Filter Cabin Air Filter Clean EGR Clean Throttle Body Clean MAF with MAF only cleaner Serpentine belt? Seafoam Heater core hoses Thermostat Radiator Hoses? Quote
5speedz34 Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 Those aren't 100k mile fixes!LOL. Everything posted thus far is pretty much what I would do at 100k. Remember mileage is only a number haha. Quote
AL Posted February 10, 2009 Author Report Posted February 10, 2009 Oil change will be done at whatever 3k interval is around it... Which will be (86, 89, 92, 95) 98k and 101k Quote
slick Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 You need to be sure to change the oil as soon as you swap the intake gaskets, then again another 500 miles later. Quote
slick Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 Coolant WILL drop into the oil when your changing the stuff. So, as soon as you do the gaskets, and before you fire it up, change the oil. Don't use anything too nice, because about 500 miles later, once you get some miles on it to flush out the coolant, change it again. Will keep you from potentially ruining the engine. Quote
5speedz34 Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 That really sucks that 3800's are that sensitive to oil. Quote
AL Posted February 10, 2009 Author Report Posted February 10, 2009 Wow, didnt know that... The intae gaskets are what the 3800 is known for blowing right Quote
5speedz34 Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 Wow, didnt know that... The intae gaskets are what the 3800 is known for blowing right Big time and if its for any prolonged period it will kill the motor. Quote
slick Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 Not the gaskets, but the upper manifold itself failing. It's just a crappy design. Quote
Andrew Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 its the upper intake melting around the EGR port causing coolant leaks, is what the L36 is known for. the LIM's go often as well. some other tips: you do need to drain some coolant to replace the LIM's. get the good metal frame LIM gaskets from GM. also replace the coolant elbows when you do this. http://www.ineedparts.com/auto-parts/intake-manifolds/gm-intake-manifold-kit-17806.html Quote
AL Posted February 10, 2009 Author Report Posted February 10, 2009 I will do the coolant flush right before I do this then so I wont have any coolant in there, then when I am done I can fill it with coolant Quote
AL Posted February 15, 2009 Author Report Posted February 15, 2009 Ok so I have been looking up parts and prices... Keep in mind that this car is a daily driver and I drive it kind of hard, but not looking to mod it or race it, but a little step-up from here to there is fine with me. What are the best spark plugs for stock, or a step-up from stock performance and reliability? I was looking at these but 7 bucks a spark plug seems high (hope the links work) http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/productdetail.aspx?MfrCode=ACD&MfrPartNumber=41101&PartType=960&PTSet=A I have also heard many good things about Autolite plugs/wires, Are they better than Delco? Any more info I can get on them would be greatly appreciated Struts, Monroe Sensa-Trac seem decent... Im not looking to lower or for major handling increases, just looking for a comfortable ride. Any experience with those? Are there better ones in the same price range? Fuel Filter, I plan on picking up ZZPs high flow filter... Good idea, Bad idea? I will also pick up the cabin air filter from the regal and install that, and clean the MAF in the next couple of days. Quote

Whats known for failing/needing replaced? I started to make a response that struts and mounts should be good till 160,000km minimum and then I thought 100K miles = 160K kilometers. Still, they shouldn't go right away then either. That would be a minimum. Thanks for the info on the cabin filter Independentfool, I was getting my oil changed when the guy told me "You have no cabin air filter." And since the previous owners did good maintenance on just about everything else I was like WTF!!! That explains it. Now I have a charcol filter. Quote
AL Posted February 15, 2009 Author Report Posted February 15, 2009 The struts I dont NEED... In fact, I wont even get them till probably 98k or 100k miles... But I wanted to look and get opinions ahead of time... I figure with the car being a rental, It could probably use them, and I just want a better ride... The ride now is fine but it could be smoother. Quote

AL Posted February 15, 2009 Author Report Posted February 15, 2009 Well you check them by pushing down on the car and seeing resistance or something... Idr Quote
